On September 19th, we support the project “IKUKYU.PJT” to think about men’s childcare leave.

■ About “IKUKYU.PJT”, a project that considers childcare leave for men Along with the efforts of various companies and organizations and changes in the world, an environment has been created that makes it easier for men to take childcare leave. On the other hand, there are still many issues surrounding childcare leave for men, such as the imbalance in housework and childcare between men and women at home, and “take-only childcare leave,” which does not actually result in childcare leave being taken, and various issues are being debated. “IKUKYU.PJT” is a commemorative day for Sekisui House Co., Ltd., which has designated September 19th as “Day to Think About Childcare Leave” since 2019, with the desire to “use men’s childcare leave as an opportunity to create a better society.” This project was established to disseminate information that will encourage men to consider promoting childcare leave, together with supporting companies and organizations. This year, the 6th year of “IKUKYU.PJT,” 153 companies and organizations will support and develop the project.

5. * Creating an environment where everyone can work with enthusiasm* ■Thoughts behind the “GO GREEN Challenge Declaration” and “Employee Vision” “‘GO
As part of our efforts to “create an environment where everyone can work with enthusiasm” as stated in our “GREEN” Challenge
Declaration, we are working to “improve the life-work balance” of our employees. Our company’s management philosophy, “Work without lies,” expresses our commitment to “work without lies” to all people involved, including customers, business partners, and employees. Based on the idea of valuing people, which we have traditionally worked on in line with this management philosophy, in 2021 we will actively support life-work balance in order to realize the happiness of our employees. We have formulated an “Employee Vision” that declares the following.
Our support for the “Project to Think About Men’s Childcare Leave” is also in line with the idea of this “Employee Vision,” and many people who sympathize with our stance of “aiming for a society where it is commonplace for men to take childcare leave in Japan.” We would like to work with companies and organizations to contribute to encouraging Japanese men to take childcare leave.
■ Our track record of taking childcare leave
Many of our male employees take childcare leave. We would like to introduce our company’s case study as an opportunity to think about childcare leave.

I took childcare leave for one month. After raising my child, I realized that I had become a father again, and now I am motivated to work. When I have business meetings with business partners, I sometimes talk about childcare in small talk, and I have been able to build relationships that are easier to talk to than before.
Because of my job, I often go to see various commercial facilities, etc., and I wonder where the diaper changing facilities are, and whether there are child seats in the men’s restroom, etc., compared to before taking childcare leave. I was able to see things from a different perspective, and the scope of my work expanded. If you are considering taking childcare leave, we highly recommend that you do so!

I am currently on childcare leave for 10 months. I didn’t know that taking care of two children would be so difficult. Since I have a 5-year-old older child, I am responsible for almost all the housework (especially meals). When I was working, it was good because I would sometimes say, “Okay, I’ll do it!” on my days off, but it’s so hard to plan a menu for three meals a day and think, “What should I have for today?” I didn’t even know how difficult it would be. I’m doing my best by using leftovers in the fridge and searching for recipes from cooking experts on YouTube. My wife gives me some bad feedback from time to time, but overall she seems to be satisfied with it. Even if I return to work, my housework skills have improved, so I think I will be able to contribute considerably compared to before.
When I had my older child, who didn’t take childcare leave, I felt like “my child was able to do many things before I knew it,” but now that I’ve taken childcare leave, I’ve been able to do things that I couldn’t do yesterday. I was able to closely watch the moment when it became like this, and I was moved. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’d love to!
