* [Advance cut released] *
* [Interview] Director Masaki Kitamura, series composition Kazuma Nagatomo, animation producer Ryo Nishimura*
–Could you please tell us again about your thoughts on the production of “After School Hanako-kun”?
Masaki Kitamura (hereinafter referred to as Kitamura): This time, I will be the director, Mr. Nagatomo will be the main writer, and Mr. Nishimura will be the producer. With the fresh feeling I had when I first started working in the anime industry, I will be returning to my desire to create something good. is completed. Also, the passion for “Hanago Shonen Hanako-kun” is felt in each and every staff member, so I think we were able to enliven the work in a good way.
Kazuma Nagatomo (hereinafter referred to as Nagatomo): There was originally an anime called “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun,” and since then we were taking on the challenge of producing it with a new staff member, so there was some pressure when I joined. There is a difference in taste between “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” and “After School Shonen Hanako-kun,” but we’re making it with the feeling that we don’t want to disappoint the fans of “Hanako-kun,” so so far the fans have been positive. Thank you for your feedback.
Kitamura: That’s right. Personally, I would like to carry on from the first season of the “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” anime and pass the baton to the second season so as not to reduce the enthusiasm of the fans.
Nishimura
Ryo (hereinafter referred to as Nishimura): When I first joined the project, I thought that since it was a short animation, it would be easier to make than a 30-minute animation, but that actually wasn’t the case (lol). The staff put as much heart and soul into it as, if not more than, a regular TV series.
Kitamura: I am also confident that we are not losing in that respect.
Nagatomo: It’s difficult because it’s so short.
Nishimura: You have to summarize one story in three to four minutes.
Nagatomo: It was difficult to adjust the script because adding just one line would make it no longer fit within the script, but in comedy works like “Hanago Shonen Hanako-kun,” it is important to make the characters fall in love with each other, so the dialogue from beginning to end is very important. I tried to improve the tempo. It may have a tempo that is about 1.5 times faster than normal anime. Although I feel sorry for the voice actors and staff, I think this was the right decision.
Kitamura: I felt that if we kept the tempo of a 30-minute anime, it wouldn’t be enough as a 10-minute movie. Since it’s only 10 minutes long, I feel like if we don’t include more content, it won’t be as satisfying as it should be. Mr. Nagatomo helped me with the amount of information and sense of tempo. In particular, I think that “Kamome Monster Nursery School” on Day 4 (Episode 4), which is almost original to the anime, was made possible by Mr. Nagatomo’s creativity.
Nagatomo: Thank you.
Nishimura: For the staff of Studio Hibari Osaka Studio, we were involved in the production of “Hanako-kun” for the first time with “Hanako-kun”. There were some difficulties at first, but as production progressed, everyone’s love for the work and characters deepened. Thanks to that, we were able to share opinions such as “Will this character do this?” Because the resolution of the character had increased, that left a deep impression on me. It was helpful because the staff around me followed up on things that I had overlooked.
–After watching the previous versions of “Hanako-kun,” I found that while the charm of the original work remains the same, the parts that were expanded upon were expanded upon.
I felt like I was letting them down.
Kitamura: Manga and anime are different mediums, so when making an anime, there are definitely parts that need to be complemented. My style is to put an original interpretation into it. I wanted to keep the original work as close to the anime as possible, so I kept the expansion to a minimum. I wanted it to be something close to the original work. Even if you don’t claim it’s original, it’s a very refreshing experience for fans to see the original work’s pictures move.
Nishimura: Thankfully, the inflated part got a good response from fans. For example, if even one scene of the inflated part is shown in the PV, people will say, “This is a scene I’ve never seen before!” and I feel like it’s a part that people are looking forward to. Nagatomo: That’s where fans of the original work felt fresh. As I mentioned earlier, in order to improve the tempo of the dialogue, I wrote the script with as much space between conversations as possible, but when I saw the drawings, the director added more play to the details. I thought the fans would be happy with this.
Kitamura: If you ask me, I might be doing it unconsciously. When I think it might be interesting to do something like this, I put it in (laughs). It was a lot of trial and error on the first day (episode 1), but as production progressed, the worldview of Hanako-kun began to sink into me. There may have been a place where you were looking for a fun element.
――There was also a story about “making it close to the original work”, but on the 4th day (episode 4), part 2 “Kamome Mons” “Tar Nursery School” is based on Aidairo sensei’s SNS project, but the content is close to the original anime.
I did. What was the reason behind this creation?
Kitamura: When I first met Mr. Nagatomo and the others, we had a casual conversation about wanting to do something original for the fans, and things gradually got more exciting (lol).
Nagatomo: We started talking about wanting to deliver something that was an added bonus to the original comic, and we received a positive response from Aidairo-sensei, so we started thinking about the content.
Kitamura: At first, I was trying to figure out what kind of content I should write, but Nagatomo-san suggested “Kamome Monster Nursery School.” I also thought, “Wouldn’t it be a nice surprise if I could embody the SNS interactions between the teacher and the fans in the form of an anime?” I created this episode thinking that it would be a good idea to give back to the fans who love the original work. During the production process, we went through a lot of trial and error to arrive at the current form. Until the actual broadcast and
distribution, I was anxious and nervous about the fan’s reaction, but in the end, it was well received.
For me, this story made me feel even more strongly that I was able to create “Hanako-kun”. Last year’s live broadcast (delivered on November 9, 2023 “Kamome Gakuen
Presents “Hanago Shonen Hanako-kun’s After Halloween Party”) featured it as an episode that left an impression on fans. I was able to hear the fans’ specific impressions, which made me feel a little better (lol).
Nagatomo: The original version is still scary when you think about the reaction from the fans. “Kamome Monster Nursery School” is based on Aidairo-sensei’s SNS project, so the content will be familiar to fans, but it was a challenge for us because we had to think about the story in a new way. During the production process, I received opinions from Aidairo-sensei, and looking back, I think that I was able to create the film in a very good environment.
Nishimura: We started by creating the worldview, so there were actually a lot of settings that weren’t depicted, but since it was only about 4 minutes long, it was difficult to make adjustments.
Kitamura: I packed all my thoughts into the four-minute length.
――Are there any new things you are conscious of when producing the sequel episode 4?
Kitamura: All episodes are made with a consistent intention, so there are no major changes in style, but we received feedback from fans after the first day (episode 1) to day four (episode 4) aired. , I decided to put even more of what I had into it. Up until then, I had been very careful, but I was trying to figure out if there was even one point that could be improved, and to incorporate it as much as possible at every stage of the process, so that the fans would be more enthusiastic about watching the movie. I’m doing it.
Nishimura: I also found out that the “inflating” part was a point that people really liked, so I’m keeping that in mind in the second half as well. Perhaps due to that influence, I created the parts that stand out as pictures in a way that draws people in. For example, some of the key points from the original work are included to make them stand out even more as an anime.
Nagatomo: We didn’t make any major changes to the script, including the sequel’s four episodes, and were conscious of “showing the characters.” It would be great if people could fall in love with the characters through the bright and fun dialogues in “Hokago Shonen Hanako-kun,” and then enter the world of “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun.” “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” had some serious stories, but “Hokago Shonen Hanako-kun” also had some stories that turned that into laughter. While I sometimes try to exaggerate the expressions, I try to avoid the dark atmosphere and try to convey the cheerful and fun excitement of the characters.
–Preliminary screenings of the 5th day (Episode 5) and the 6th day (Episode 6) were also held at the “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Kamome Academy Summer Festival” held the other day (July 28, 2024). There were cheers at various scenes.
Nagatomo: I was very grateful to be able to watch it at the venue and feel the fans’ reactions directly.
Nishimura: At screenings, sometimes I get the laughs I was aiming for, and sometimes I get cheers in unexpected places, so I thought it was quite difficult (lol).
Kitamura: I wasn’t able to go, but I heard from Mr. Nishimura and another staff member that it was very exciting. It’s a blessing, and it makes me feel good.
–Please tell us about the points to keep an eye on in preparation for the broadcast/distribution of the 4th episode of the sequel.
Nishimura: Even in the fourth episode of the sequel, there are still episodes that focus on various characters other than Hanako-kun and Nene, such as Teru and Aoi. Fans of each character should also look forward to it.
Nagatomo: It’s difficult not being able to talk in detail before the broadcast. There are several stories in the sequel that are divided into the first half and the second half, and the content is quite advanced, but there is one episode where Mitsuba is used in the final punchline. I think that Mitsuba’s presence made the story come together very nicely, and I would recommend anyone who likes Mitsuba to watch it.
Kitamura: This sequel has three times the challenge of delivering even more powerful content. I think you’ll understand the content if you watch it until the end, so please watch it. Thank you for your support of the anime “After School Shonen Hanako-kun”!
――Finally, please give a message to those who are looking forward to the broadcast and distribution of the fourth sequel.
Nishimura: The energetic Hanako-kuns will be back again. It’s going to be even more slapstick and the tension will continue to rise, so please look forward to it!
Nagatomo: “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun 2” is also coming up, but I hope you enjoy the sequel to “Hokago Shonen Hanako-kun.” Although there is a huge difference in enthusiasm between this and “Jibaku Shonen Hanako-kun” (lol), it is a work in which the characters are bright and cheerful, so I hope you will enjoy it.
Kitamura: I am making “Hanako-kun” with the feeling that it is the mainstream of “Hanako-kun” (lol), so I hope everyone enjoys it. The entire production team is working hard to meet the expectations of the fans, so please look forward to it.
