◆Overview The Institute for Planetary Materials (Misasa Town, Tottori Prefecture), which is part of the Institute for Advanced Research of Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu), is a research institute conducted by the University’s Teacher Education Development Center. On August 21, 2024, we held an experiential learning experience for 33 junior high school students in the Next Generation Science Human Resources Development Program at our research institute.
Since 2023, the Okayama University Teacher Education Development Center has been implementing a science program for junior high school students in Okayama Prefecture with the support of the Nakatani Foundation for the Promotion of Medical and Engineering Measurement Technology. It was conducted at our research institute located in . First, on July 20th, Professor Katsura Kobayashi gave a preliminary lecture entitled “The World of Space and Planetary Materials Science” (at Okayama University Tsushima Campus), followed by a total of 40 students, 33 students from the Next Generation Science Human Resources Development Program and 7 supervisors. visited the institute on August 21st.
After Director Kiwami Yoshino gave an explanation about the institute, the students were divided into six groups and visited the ultra-clean room where samples taken from the asteroid Ryugu are stored, a remote observation booth for Ryugu particles using SEM, and a meteorite. The participants were given a tour of the explanation booth and the high-pressure laboratory that creates the environment deep in the earth.
The tour proceeded in an interactive format with questions and answers, and at the end, a summary of the two-day program was given, and it concluded with an acknowledgment from the representative students.
