About the regional brand Nakatsugawa Kurikinton
Nakatsugawa Kurikinton is produced and sold from the time new domestic chestnuts begin arriving at Japanese confectionery shops in the city until the vernal equinox.During that period, freshly made Kurikinton is sought after from all over the country. Many tourists gather here. *Depending on the store, sales may end during the period.
Nakatsugawa City is the birthplace of Kurikinton
Nakatsugawa City is located in a mountainous area and has cherished the blessings of nature since the Edo period. In this area, each family used to eat the harvested chestnuts in various ways, such as making chestnut rice, roasting chestnuts, or boiling chestnuts. Eventually, sugar came to be used in every household, and
“Kurikinton” was created by cutting steamed chestnuts, taking them out, crushing them in a mortar, adding sugar, sprinkling them on rice cakes or rice, or squeezing them with a tea towel and eating them. It is said that The area was lined with merchant houses along the road, and was a distribution hub where many people came and went, so from around the late Edo period, the tea ceremony began to become popular, and confectionery artisans competed in their skills to create delicious sweets that would go well with delicious tea. I did. Later, in the middle of the Meiji era, it is said that “Kurikinton” was commercialized by a Japanese confectionery shop.
Currently, there is a stone monument in front of Nakatsugawa Station that reads, “The birthplace of Kurikinton.”
