Content Overview

History of Sakai City

People began to settle around Sakai City during the Paleolithic period. Ruins in the city have unearthed hammered stone tools from about 10,000 years ago, earthenware and stone tools from the Jomon period, and bronze bells and pottery from the Yayoi period. During the 4th to 5th centuries, when the Yamato Imperial Court was established, the Mozu Tumulus Group, consisting of more than 100 burial mounds, including Emperor Nintoku’s Mausoleum, was built in Sakai.

During the Heian period, this area came to be called “Sakai” because it was located on the border of the three countries of Settsu, Kawachi, and Izumi, and from the Kamakura period onward, it developed as a base for shipping and trade in western Japan.

About the Content

Starting from Sakai Higashi Station on the Nankai Koya Line, you can visit Mozumibara Hokuryo and Hansei Emperor’s Mausoleum, located at the northern end of the Mozu Kofun Group. The course also includes Hojitsu Shrine, known for warding off disasters, Nagayama Kofun, one of the three largest tombs in the world, and the Nintoku Tenno-ryo Tumulus, the largest keyhole-shaped tumulus in Japan. The tour continues with visits to Sakai City Museum, Daisen Park, Emperor Richu Mausoleum, and more, concluding at Nakamozu Station on the Nankai Koya Line.

In the future, we plan to expand the site to include the city’s many ancient tombs, spots related to Sen no Rikyu and Akiko Yosano, and stores selling Sakai cutlery. We aim to extend beyond Sakai City for a more comprehensive exploration of burial mounds.
