The Japan Standards Association (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Chairman: Hiroshi Asahi) has published the Japanese Industrial Standards (hereinafter referred to as JIS) (supplement) for guide symbols on August 20, 2024. I did.
Recently, “Flood/inland water inundation caution” and “Light warning device (for fire)” have been added to the JIS graphic symbols for disaster-related information. It is hoped that this will raise awareness of the “flood/inland flood warning” that the area in which you are located is at risk of flooding. Furthermore, the “light alarm device (for fire)” is expected to enable hearing-impaired people, the elderly, and foreigners living in Japan to recognize fire warnings more quickly.

This JIS specifies the “graphic symbols used for guidance” for the unspecified number of people, and was established in 2002. Subsequently, in 2017, we conducted a complete review of the symbols in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2017, major revisions were made to review the technical issues with the entire standard and address problems such as the display of barrier-free facilities not matching the actual situation.
We would like to introduce the main points of this revision as follows.
1. “Flood/Inland water flooding warning”
In recent years, many lives have been lost due to disasters caused by heavy rains every year. Therefore, as a sign to indicate the risk of flood damage, “Flood/Inland Water Flood Caution” has been changed to a guidance pictorial symbol (hereinafter referred to as “Picture Symbol”). ) has been newly added.
In addition, in line with the [Flood/Inland Water Overflow Caution Graphic Symbol], we have revised the design of the graphic symbol for “Flood/Inland Water Flood Disaster Type General” among the disaster type general graphic symbols.
By adding three upward arrows to the double wave representing the rising water level, the rising water level is expressed more clearly.
※
Disaster type general map symbols are symbols set for each disaster such as “tsunami/storm surge, landslide/landslide, debris flow, flood/inland water overflow, large-scale fire, etc.” Evacuation site signs are used to guide people to evacuation sites.
*Caution graphic symbols are graphic symbols that express precautions in general actions indicated by the graphic symbol.
2. “Light alarm device (for fire)”
Light warning devices are already widespread as infrastructure in Europe and the United States, but in Japan, although they are being installed little by little at stations and airports, they are not as widespread as in Europe and the United States.
Therefore, with the aim of accelerating the spread of light alarm devices in Japan, we have created a “Light Alarm Device (Fire) Graphical Symbol” to indicate the location where a light alarm device is installed or the light alarm device itself to notify the occurrence of a fire. has been newly added.
The graphical symbols added in this revision are JIS S 0102
(Consumer Warning Graphic Symbols – Test Procedure) A four-way comprehension test was conducted for Japanese and foreigners (American and Chinese), and the design that achieved a certain level of understanding was adopted. I am.
By using graphic symbols designed to ensure understanding, recognition and dissemination of unified signs will be promoted, allowing not only Japanese people but also tourists visiting Japan to accurately and quickly recognize dangerous areas and useful equipment in the event of a disaster. It is hoped that this will be possible.
