Announcement of Shiseido Gallery “Syuku Watanabe”
Shiseido Gallery will hold the “Syuku Watanabe Shiku/Syuku” exhibition from November 6th (Wednesday) to December 26th (Thursday), 2024.
By focusing on motifs that evoke the conflicts that occur between humans and nature, such as invasive species and extinct species, Shiori Watanabe creates many works that hint at the issues that confront us as humans.
This exhibition will feature Watanabe’s masterpiece Sans, which connects aquariums and planters with hoses and circulates water and bacteria to create an autonomous ecosystem.
Along with the Noh play “Okina”, we will be exhibiting a new Noh video installation inspired by the Noh play “Okina”. “Old Man” depicts the cyclical relationship between humans, gods, and nature, in which a god “resides” in humans, prays for them, and then returns to being human again, as well as the marginal view of nature that lies dormant in the Japanese archipelago. Watanabe also points out that in modern times, especially since the outbreak of the new coronavirus, there has been a growing awareness that viruses live in the human body as a “host,” and that there is a growing sense of moving beyond nations and communities to coexist with other species and others. I would like to point out that this may be the case.
We take a long-term view of the dynamism that has built up Japan’s ecosystem through the relationship between nature and humans, and illuminate it from the perspective of “inns,” highlighting the various problems that arise there, and at the same time exploring how we should live in the future. * Artist profile *
Shiori Watanabe (Watanabe/Shiori)
Born in Tokyo in 1984. Graduated from Chuo University’s Faculty of Letters, Department of French Literature in 2008, Tokyo University of the Arts’ Department of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture, in 2015, and Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University’s Graduate School of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture, in 2017.
The main exhibit is “Non Not equal Between man and matter” (3331 Arts Chiyoda, 2021), “Bebe” (WHITEHOUSE, 2021), “Tarari Tarari Tarari Agariralarito” (Shinjuku Kabukicho Noh Stage, 2022), “BLUE” (SACS, 2024), and others.
*Highlights of this exhibition*
* 1. The largest “Sans room” to date, making full use of the Shiseido Gallery space*
Watanabe’s masterpiece Sans
room》 This work has been exhibited at a number of venues so far, but it will be exhibited on a dynamic three-dimensional space in the Shiseido Gallery, making it the largest scale exhibition to date.
* 2. New Noh video installation *
New Noh works created by Watanabe in collaboration with Shingo Kato (Noh actor), Noboru Yasuda (Noh actor), and Dominic Cheng (information studies researcher) will be exhibited as video and sound
installations.
* 3. Performance art*
Performers will appear in the venue irregularly and perform
performances using “movement.” Please pay attention to information from Shiseido Gallery about when it will appear and how often it will appear.
