The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography is pleased to announce the exhibition “Looking at Japan’s Emerging Artists from the Current Place vol. 21”.
The “Japan’s Emerging Artists” exhibition has been held since 2002 as a venue for the development of new creative activities, supporting creative spirits who are challenging the possibilities of photography and video, and discovering promising artists. It is being held. This 21st exhibition introduces the efforts of five artists who re-examine society, the environment, and the relationships between people from their own positions, and present fragments of the world through photography.
We live in a time of change, facing numerous events that shake the values we have taken for granted. The environment for photographic expression is also undergoing drastic changes as technology advances and spreads, and expression methods diversify. The artists
participating in this exhibition face the world according to their own sensibilities, deepen their thinking from unique perspectives, and present them as works of art. Emi Ota Kuro focuses on the small things around us, such as living things and everyday objects, and uses photography as a way to capture time. She dispassionately observes the ever-changing landscape of the land where she lives, which can be described as temporary. Sayuri Kanno, who continues to record, Kenji Chiga, who exposes reality with images that mix truth and fiction with a documentary perspective, and Shingo Kanagawa, who cuts out the distance and relationship between individuals without being bound by general concepts, scenes that someone once saw. Through his works, Hiroki Harada evokes memories in the viewer. The works of artists who choose photography as a method of expression and capture reality with a flexible gaze give those of us living in the present a perspective to see the world from a slightly different angle than usual. The diverse endeavors of these five artists will provide an opportunity to reconsider the possibilities of today’s and future perspectives. Artist biography
