What are the “policies required of national leaders”?
*Announcement of survey results in 6 countries around the world including Japan*

Aung Consulting Co., Ltd. (TSE Standard Market: 2459, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director and CEO: Akira Shinta, hereinafter referred to as “Aung Consulting”), which operates a global marketing business (*), has announced that it has expanded to 6 locations around the world, including Japan. We conducted a survey on national policies in six countries. 2024 will be a global “election year” with a series of important elections in countries and regions around the world. When a government changes hands through elections, there is a significant shift in diplomatic stance and economic policy, increasing the possibility of a sudden change in the world situation. This time, we conducted a survey in six countries: Japan, China, South Korea, India, the United States, and the United Kingdom, regarding the policies they want from national leaders and the countries in which they think politics is functioning well. We will inform you of the results.

■Survey results
1. What policies do you want from the country’s leaders? (Multiple answers) In each country, policies related to “economy/industry” and “medical care/nursing care/welfare/pensions” ranked high.

In Japan, three items accounted for approximately 60%:
economy/industry (21.9%), medical care/nursing care/welfare/pensions (19.9%), and public finance/taxation (16.1%). As Prime Minister Kishida’s term of office expires, voting for the LDP presidential election approaches on September 27th, and attention is focused on the policies of each candidate in the lead-up to the first presidential election since the dissolution of the faction following political funding issues. .

Although real wages have recently turned positive due to wage hikes and summer bonuses, wages have not kept up with price increases, and fundamental reforms are needed, not just the efforts of private companies. In addition, there are social issues (2025 problems) such as increased social security costs and labor shortages caused by the “baby boomer generation” becoming elderly people over 75 years old, and there is a growing interest in medical care, nursing care, welfare, and pensions. It is thought that it is increasing.

In China, the largest number of respondents was medical/nursing care/welfare/pension (24.3%), followed by economy/industry (20.2%). China’s economic growth rate has been depressed due to the effects of the recent zero-corona virus policy and real estate recession. In addition, although the one-child policy was abolished in 2016, the birthrate is declining at a faster pace than expected, and according to the United Nations, China’s population will peak in 2021 (1,426.44 million people) and have continued to decline ever since. The number of people in China will decline from 2024 to 2054, and it is predicted that China will have the largest decline in the world (204.47 million people decrease)*1.

In South Korea, three items accounted for approximately 60%: economy/industry (24.2%), medical care/nursing care/welfare/pensions (19.2%), and public finance/taxation (15.1%). In the South Korean general election held on April 10, the largest reformist opposition party, the Kyodo Democratic Party, won an overwhelming victory, including its affiliated parties, further increasing the rift between the ruling party and the parliamentary majority. The South Korean economy is facing the problem of a rapidly declining birthrate and aging population, with the total fertility rate in 2023 reaching a record low of 0.72 for eight consecutive years, due to widening socio-economic disparities and lifestyle changes caused by the coronavirus pandemic. I am.

In India, the following were economy/industry (21.0%), medical care/nursing care/welfare/pensions (15.6%), and agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and food (13.8%). India’s general election was held from April to June, and the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Modi, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), maintained a majority, but lost a significant number of seats. Up until now, the country has suppressed Muslims and implemented forced agricultural reforms, but the dissatisfaction of low-income groups and religious minorities who have been left behind by economic growth appears to be a major cause of defeat. Although India is currently recording a high growth rate due to population growth, its per capita income level is low, and it is thought that there is a high level of interest in economic and industrial policies.

In the United States, medical care/nursing care/welfare/pensions (15.3%) and economy/industry (13.6%) ranked high, but seven items each accounted for more than 10%, making it difficult to specialize in one policy. There is a need to implement policies in a well-balanced manner. Ahead of the presidential and federal elections on November 5th, the debate held on September 10th (local time) focused on domestic issues such as inflation, immigration, and abortion, as well as issues such as Ukraine and Gaza, the Palestinian autonomous region. The election campaign is entering a critical period, with discussions taking place on a wide range of topics, including diplomatic issues such as conflicts.

In the UK, three items accounted for approximately 60%: medical care/nursing care/welfare/pensions (23.4%), economy/industry (22.7%), and population measures/immigration/education (12.6%). In the British general election held on July 4, the Labor Party won an overwhelming victory with over 60% of the seats, taking back power from the Conservative Party for the first time in 14 years. This appealed to voters who were disappointed with the Conservative Party due to the turmoil of the Conservative government and the spurring of inflation, and policies such as restricting immigration, withdrawing carbon-free targets, and major tax cuts gained support.

2. In which country do you think politics is working well?
With the exception of South Korea, the respondents’ home countries ranked high as “countries with well-functioning politics.”

In Japan, the number of respondents from Japan (25.8%) and other countries (25.5%) was almost the same. Among others, the response rate of “none” or “don’t know” accounted for approximately 70%.

In South Korea, it was the United States (41.2%) and South Korea (24.2%). According to the “Government Trust Survey” released by the OECD in July 2024, the percentage of people who answered that they “trust the Korean government” was 37.1%, lower than the OECD average of 39.3%, and 44.3% of Koreans said that they “trust the Korean government.” Respondents either do not trust the government or have a low level of trust in the government*2. It is thought that many respondents chose other countries rather than their own country due to their low level of trust in politics.
