Heralbony x TeaRoom | Aiming for a kinder world without conflict through collaboration with unique artists
*We will jointly produce tea utensils and hold a tea ceremony using the collaborative tea utensils at ICC Summit KYOTO 2024*
* TeaRoom Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo / Representative Director: Ryo Iwamoto / hereinafter referred to as TeaRoom) is a subsidiary of Heralbony Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture /
Representative Director and Co-CEO: Takaya Matsuda, Futo Matsuda / Hereinafter referred to as Heralbony), we use tea utensils painted by unique artists contracted with Industry.
A tea party was held at the Co-Creation (ICC) Summit KYOTO 2024. *
This is the fifth time that TeaRoom has hosted a tea ceremony at the ICC Summit. We asked participating business owners and executives questions based on the summit’s concept of “Learning together, creating industry together.” The tea bowls and sweets plates used during this event were painted by an artist who works at “Atelier Yaho!!” in Kyoto City Fushimi Gakuen, a welfare facility in Kyoto. It was produced at the pottery “Asahiyaki” in Uji.
The tea party served as an opportunity to ask questions about a society that is inclusive of people with disabilities, as seen in TeaRoom’s philosophy of “Aiming for a kinder world without
conflict.” The core of the tea ceremony was the words of Juko Murata, the founder of wabicha, to “disorient the boundaries between Japanese and Chinese.” At that time, the focus was on Chinese tools, and various ideas were created based on this phrase, which captured the idea of “how to harmonize with Japanese things” and “how to develop while adding Japanese characteristics.” Together with Heralbony, we have delivered a picture of a society where people come together without any separation.
In addition, by using tea utensils freely expressed by people with disabilities, we created a place where people can go beyond words and backgrounds and think about the thoughts expressed by the things themselves through drinking tea.

* ■ Comment from TeaRoom representative Ryo Iwamoto *
“A tea ceremony is a ceremony. In other words, it is a prayer.” These are the words that a religious participant said to me when I was invited to the Middle East as a tea master and held a tea ceremony. “Prayers for the future” have been practiced by humans since ancient times, transcending race and religion. Ever since that day, I have come to see the tea room as a place where we can express our hopes for a new normal, through the common daily act of sharing a cup of tea, a drink.
This time, together with Heralbony, we worked to create a world in a tea room where there is no separation between “disabled” and “healthy”. In modern times, it is our mission as tea masters and our company to utilize the tea room as a place where we can deeply share extraordinary experiences that redefine our daily lives. I would like to continue to pray for the future from the tea room, aiming for a kinder world without conflict.
* ■ Comment from Takaya Matsuda, CEO of Heralbony *
Were there really people with intellectual disabilities in the “tea ceremony”, a noble art that explores aesthetic sense and harmony between people through tea? In the special space of the tea room, the handling of tea utensils, the manner in which tea is served, and even the manner in which guests are entertained are strictly regulated, and in this world where careful etiquette is valued, people with intellectual disabilities… Naturally, the desire to see the sights that existed there arose within me. Tea ceremony master Soryo Iwamoto, who took this opportunity to present his new ideas, and Asahiyaki, the 16th generation
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Hosai Matsubayashi.
* ■ Comment from Hosai Matsubayashi, the 16th generation of Asahiyaki * It was a huge and valuable experience for me to participate in a project with the wonderful concept of “blurring the differences between Japanese and Chinese.”
Each of us is different, and we all have things in common.
This time, I was able to create a piece with an artist from Atelier Yahoo!!, who has a contract with HERALBONY, and when I saw the finished product, I thought, “What do we consider good?” As a creator, I felt that I had created a work that asked me a very fundamental question.
Just because something is technically superior or has an excellent design doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good thing.
And when I get rid of the illusion that there are good things that are common to everyone, what do I feel is good? The question appears before you.
Each picture is definitely powerful.
I’m sure this is because the paintings were filled with joy. I felt this very pure emotion intensely in my atelier.
When you come into contact with the individuality of each work, you may find one that touches your heart.
I believe that you and the creator of something that touched your heart will definitely have something in common.
As someone who helped create these works, I would be very happy if you could come into contact with these works and ask yourself again what “good things” and “things you like” are for you.
* ■ Tea room “Gairyu Sanso” *
This tea ceremony was held in the tea room of Tairyu Sanso, located in front of the gate of Nanzenji Temple in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. It was built in the Meiji period as a villa for Kanetsune Ijuin, who was an excellent architect and gardener, and was later expanded and renovated by the carpenter Tokichi Shimada.The garden is designated as a national scenic spot and the building is designated as an important cultural property of the country. , a building that is usually closed to the public.

* ■ About Asahiyaki *
Asahiyaki is a pottery that has been making tea utensils for over 400 years in Uji, Kyoto, the tea producing area. They dug the soil in Uji themselves, passed it down through the generations, made vessels that suited the spirit of tea, and were loved by people who loved tea. It has been passed down through the Matsubayashi family to the pottery owner Hosai the 16th.
Hosai the 16th explores how to express Asahi ware’s aesthetic sense of “Keirei Sabi” in modern times, and is breaking new ground. In addition, we are actively collaborating with various companies, brands, artists, and designers, and have held many exhibitions and workshops overseas, working to enrich people’s lives through tea utensils. We are doing so.
