Gifts for children
* ◆This activity, now in its third year, will further expand its circle * As the youngest of three children, the “toys” and “clothes” given to me were always hand-me-downs from my older brother, and I had no recollection of ever receiving a “gift prepared just for me.” However, I still vividly remember how happy I was when I woke up on Christmas morning when I was in the second grade of elementary school to find the palm Pikachu that I wanted the most at the time sitting next to my pillow. This was my first experience, and if I were to meet my own child in the future, I would like to give him the joy of having his honest wishes come true.

More than 20 years have passed since then, and it has become an annual event in our family to give my son the gift he wishes for on behalf of Santa every Christmas. An encounter has arrived. I grew up with many children at the children’s home opened by my father, who is the director, and now at the age of 75, I am the father of over 60 children.I want to do whatever I can to help out as I see him in a relaxed state. I thought.

As I talked with the director, I learned about the actual situation at children’s homes, and I was moved by facts I didn’t know before. When we talked about Christmas, he explained, “The sweets we receive from local service organizations are the Christmas presents for the children here.” While I had a lot of respect for the continued efforts of the people in the service organizations, this fact coincided with my original experience, and I said on the spot, “Please let me help in some way,” and expressed my ingenuity. This activity started while doing so.

This is the third year since we started this activity. The shape of the activity was in place, so when I started thinking about how I could continue it while thinking more about the children, Hiromatsu, the head chef at Etajimaso Restaurant locavore, told me, “Shinsei Gakuen.” I received an offer saying, “I would like to give lunch at Etajima-so to the children of “.
At the same time, I want my children to know that there is a career that allows them to create things like Chef Hiromatsu as a life option, and if they can consider this career as one of their future choices, I will have them eat lunch with me. Not only that, but I thought it would be a valuable experience for the children. “I want to show the seriousness of the chef’s gaze as he prepares the food, and the gentle movements of his hands as he finishes the dish.And I also want people to eat the exquisite plate that the chef has created.” I did. Chef Hiromatsu also sympathized with my thoughts, reached out to his seniors and colleagues who are active in various fields, and received permission from chefs far from Etajima to create a dream-like lunch experience. Now we can deliver it to your children.

* ◆What is Hiroshima Shinsei Gakuen? *
This children’s home was opened two and a half months after the atomic bomb was dropped, and is the second oldest of the 13 children’s homes in Hiroshima Prefecture. Our history begins when we rented part of the barracks of Nagahisa Ujina Army’s Akatsuki Unit in Minami Ward, Hiroshima City, for the purpose of housing and protecting atomic bomb orphans, war orphans, repatriated orphans, etc.

In April 1979, we moved to our current location in Saijo-cho, Higashihiroshima City, and in the 79 years since our establishment, we have cared for a total of 2,100 people, including 300 repatriated orphans, atomic bomb orphans, war-damaged orphans, and 1,800 children in general care. Today, 65 children between the ages of 2 and 18 who have been abused or are unable to live with their parents for some reason live together.

Our childcare policy is to “respect and understand the human rights of children, and to help them discover their hidden potential,” and staff live with the children on a live-in flextime system. In addition, on the 80m field on both wings, the children and staff work up a sweat every day by playing baseball or volleyball, or play games against local federation teams. Through group sports instruction, we develop cooperation, law-abiding skills, a sense of responsibility, and perseverance. We aim to improve physical strength and civility. On weekdays, the children and staff attend school and spend time together like one big family inside the school.
