“TOKYO” is an island promotion project by startups sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in which Mr.
The selected businesses for “ISLANDHOOD with STARTUPS” have been decided. “TOKYO ISLANDHOOD with
STARTUPS is an initiative to support startups, individual business owners, and others in developing their businesses in the island areas of Tokyo, with the aim of improving the appeal of the island areas of Tokyo and solving regional issues.
In FY2020, which is the second year, we will introduce the local government and key people in the region, create a place for selected businesses to interact, disseminate information both inside and outside the island, provide information on various subsidies, and provide local support for commercialization. We will provide support for approximately 6 months, including paying part of the activity costs, with the aim of allowing selected businesses to develop their businesses on Miyakejima, Mikurajima, Hachijojima, and Aogashima.
*About selected businesses in FY2020*
Four meetups (briefing sessions) held beforehand brought together companies and individuals involved in tourism, transportation, education, business succession, etc., with a total of 122
participants.
From among a large number of applications, we have decided on selected businesses for FY2020 based on perspectives such as “level of understanding of the island region,” “uniqueness of the project,” and “continuity of involvement with the island region.” I did. From October 2024, we will begin providing support for the business development of selected businesses. We are also planning an event to share the results of the selected businesses in February 2025.

*Issues surrounding the island region and background of the business* Tokyo’s remote “island regions” have a rich natural environment and unique culture, but they face challenges such as population outflow, aging infrastructure, and a shortage of medical personnel. On the other hand, there are many untapped resources and new approaches could create more value.
Until now, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been implementing the “Future Tokyo” Strategy 17.
The Tama/Island Regional Industry Promotion Project*1 has provided support in a variety of areas, including industrial development, tourism promotion, medical care, and disaster prevention. “TOKYO ISLANDHOOD”
with STARTUPS” is a project that aims to improve the appeal of island regions and solve problems by utilizing the ideas and technologies of startups.
Hitokara Media and JTB Research Institute will promote industrial development in island regions by connecting island people and players and supporting commercialization in order to realize the program concept “Start from the island, connect to the island” We will do so.
