Ryohin Keikaku provides products and services that support the basics of daily life in order to realize a “pleasant life and society.” We are developing products that utilize natural materials, products that take into consideration reducing the burden on the environment, and products that are learned from traditions and cultures around the world. In order to further promote resource circulation, we will develop clothing for the 2024 fall/winter season that will be recycled. Based on the product design concept, we will develop products that have all materials unified so that they can be easily recycled after use.
■Developing environmentally friendly products and working toward a recycling-oriented society
Since its inception in 1980, MUJI has continued to create products while adhering to three viewpoints: “selection of materials,” “inspection of processes,” and “simplification of packaging.” Based on the idea of “not wasting resources,” we recycle parts that would normally be discarded, such as scraps generated when cutting clothing fabric, into yarn, which we then turn into fabric and products. . Until now, we have sold products made from recycled nylon, recycled polyester, and recycled wool.
This time, we will conduct a “process inspection” to promote resource circulation for textile products, and will begin efforts to design easily recyclable products that do not require disassembly or separation processes during recycling.
The “Fleece Returns to Materials” series has been commercialized using 100% PET (polyethylene terephthalate) raw material for all product parts, including the body fabric, accessories such as buttons, and sewing thread. The fleece material used for the body fabric is 100% recycled PET, which is mainly made from plastic bottles, and is lightweight, has just the right amount of bulge, and is soft to wear. It can be used as an outer layer in the early autumn when it starts to get chilly, and as a mid-layer when the winter gets deeper and colder, and can be used for a long time throughout the fall and winter. In the future, we will strengthen product development that takes into account not only the time of making and using the product, but also what happens after the product is used.
In addition, to address issues such as microplastics that flow out when washing fleece materials, we have developed and sold a laundry net that does not allow fiber waste to pass through. We have developed and sold a high-density woven laundry net that does not allow fiber waste to pass through, thereby reducing the burden on the environment. We are striving to
