We use only high-quality fruit with excellent color and firm tannins, resulting in a wine with a rich, powerful flavor and firm structure. The concentration, low yield and small fruit are reminiscent of the great vintage of 2015. Bright aromas of dark cherry, hibiscus, and blackberry are complemented by fresh earthy scents and soft accents of vanilla. On the palate, rich flavors of dark fruit and black cherry pie are balanced by the warmth of bark and baking spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

A vintage of Insignia strongly reflects the character of the region where the grapes were grown that year. “Insignia 2021” uses many grapes from our own fields in the Stags Leap area, known for its rich black fruits and elegant tannins. We also incorporate carefully selected, high-quality fruit from the Rutherford and Oak Knoll AVAs (U.S. government certified grape growing areas) to bring out the balance, complexity, and rich flavor that can only come from 100% in-house vineyards. This vintage uses fruit from all seven of Joseph Phelps Vineyards' vineyards. Quality fruit, particularly from the Rutherford and Oak Knoll AVAs, provides balance, complexity and richness.

Additionally, South Napa's Sascol Vineyard yields a rich, inky black color and subtle acidity, with flavors of black fruit, dried flowers and tobacco.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards was founded in 1973 by Joseph Phelps, a well-known figure in the construction industry and winemaker, who named his name in the then-unexplored wilderness of Napa Valley, California. It all begins with the establishment of a winery. Continuing our pioneering spirit and pursuit of excellence, we purchased land for a vineyard on the western Sonoma Coast in the heart of Napa Valley and began making wine.
