“Sustainable Toba'' website launched to disseminate local initiatives for sustainable regional development (Toba Chamber of Commerce and Industry)
Sustainable TOBA From “living by the sea” to “living with the sea”
Sustainable Toba website top
Toba City, said to be the seaside gateway to Ise-Shima National Park, is located at the tip of the Shima Peninsula and has a beautiful Rias coastline. It has welcomed many guests as a place to stay when visiting Ise Grand Shrine, and in ancient times as a port for cruise ships connecting Edo and Osaka.
Toba has the largest number of ama divers in Japan, and has a thriving fishing and tourism industry, but due to recent climate change, the sea environment is changing day by day. As residents who have relied on the ocean's blessings in our daily lives, is it okay for us to just continue to enjoy the ocean's blessings? We held a workshop with tourism officials, fishermen's cooperatives, and government officials in Toba City as an opportunity to think about what we should and can do. Participants agreed that life in Toba is closely connected to the sea, and that seven themes are important for Toba's sustainability.
Ama: Experience the Ama culture
Toba style: Spending time feeling the sea
Local food: Try local fish in Toba
Nature: Feel the connection between people and nature
Toba culture: Respect Toba's unique culture and history
Long stay: Stay for a long time and enjoy
Jingu: Feel the connection with Ise Grand Shrine
Purpose of launching the “Sustainable Toba” website
In Toba, not only people who are directly involved with nature, such as ama divers and fishermen, but also people who live in hotels and restaurants benefit from the blessings of the sea every day. We want the Toba sea, which is inseparable from our daily lives, to remain sustainable for the next 100 years.
We have launched this website in order to start activities that will lead to the future as the ocean environment changes. This site aims to further expand its reach by informing people about the activities of companies and people working to create a sustainable community, and allows visitors to contribute to the development of the Toba community while enjoying their trip. The purpose is to provide tips for travel destinations.
Through this website, the Toba Chamber of Commerce and Industry will contribute to the promotion of local life and industry by increasing local sustainable initiatives, deepening understanding, and increasing the number of people involved.
