Press release: September 25, 2024
New release of “Sardine Children Jako Miso'', a rice companion that conveys Osaka's food culture
Added to “Rice companion” series promoting local production for local consumption
Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo/President: Nobuo Domae), which operates MUJI, is partnering with Osaka City Fisheries Cooperative (Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture/President: Eiichiro Kitamura) and Amekaze Co., Ltd. (Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture). /Representative Director Minoru Toyoda), we will be selling “Sardine Children Jako Miso'', a rice accompaniment made using whitebait caught in Osaka Bay and miso from Osaka. Starting September 27th (Friday), it will go on sale at a total of 35 stores, including stores in some areas, mainly in the Kinki region, and online stores.
Ryohin Keikaku aims for stores to play the role of community centers in each region, collaborate with local residents and local governments, and contribute to regional revitalization through the promotion of local production for local consumption, job creation, and town development. We are doing activities. We have established a “Regional Business Department'' as an organization to promote community-based initiatives, and one of our activities is to cooperate with local producers and processing companies in product development.
This time, the “Kyoto Nara Division”*1, one of our regional divisions, is collaborating with an Osaka business in product development to help customers enjoy even more delicious rice just in time for the season when new rice begins to appear on the market. I made a new “rice companion”.
■Using whitebait caught in Osaka Bay and miso from Osaka
Ryohin Keikaku's Kyoto-Nara division has so far created “Namba green onion and hawk claw sweet and spicy sauce'' made with traditional Osaka vegetables and “Mushroom soy sauce'' made with mushrooms grown at a welfare farm. We have released “Koji sauce''.
Osaka has been rich in sardines since the Edo period, and thanks to the blessings from rivers such as the Yodo River, a large amount of fatty sardines and their young whitebait fish are caught, and it is known as one of the top brands in the country. In addition, in Osaka, there has been a tradition of cooking small fish that cannot be eaten as a dish, or chirimenjako (chirimenjako), which is a small fish that cannot normally be valued, in a sweet and spicy manner. Although there are various types of side dish miso all over the country, chirimenjako miso is a regional food that can only be found in Osaka. In support of the local people's desire to deliver and pass on Osaka's food culture to as many people as possible, we have combined Chirimenja, made with Osaka-produced whitebait, and Kojiya Amekaze's miso, which has been around for over 300 years. We have developed a new rice companion.
The miso used this time is a sweet and spicy side dish miso, and by frying it with sesame oil, it brings out even more flavor and aroma from the chirimenjako.
The Kyoto-Nara Division has been collaborating with local producers and processing companies in developing products by utilizing traditional vegetables from the Kinki region, irregular ingredients, and discarded materials, and selling them at MUJI stores. Ta. We plan to continue to engage in initiatives centered around food, with the aim of promoting local production for local consumption and contributing to the revitalization of local industries.
