[IBM Japan] JI Accident and Fire Insurance launches “Suitcase damage insurance automatic payment service” utilizing suitcase damage detection using AI image analysis and automatic remittance service
IBM Japan Press release: September 26, 2024 JI Accident and Fire Insurance launches “Suitcase damage insurance automatic payment service” that utilizes suitcase damage detection using AI image analysis and automatic remittance service From September 26th, JI Accident and Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director and President Executive Officer: Kazuhiko Kaneko, hereinafter referred to as “JI Accident and Fire Insurance”) will use AI in overseas travel insurance claims payment operations. We have started offering the “Suitcase Damage Insurance Claims Automatic Payment Service,” a service that detects damage from suitcase damage images and automatically remits insurance claims. JI Accident and Fire Insurance is managed by System Research Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, President and CEO: Hiroshi Hirayama, hereinafter referred to as “System Research”) and IBM Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Hiroshi Hirayama). We built this service together with President: Akio Yamaguchi (hereinafter referred to as “IBM Japan”). In this service, AI analyzes photos taken and uploaded by customers, detects damage, and evaluates the contents. The use of AI eliminates the need for accident response staff to visually check damage and process payments, making insurance claims payments that previously took at least three days now possible on the same day. By providing this service, JI Accident and Fire Insurance will improve customer satisfaction by reducing the time required to pay insurance claims and reduce the workload of employees.

This service uses the AI image recognition solution “IBM Maximo Visual Inspection” provided by IBM Japan, and was developed in-house by JI Accident and Fire Insurance with the support of System Research’s AI specialist team. IBM Maximo Visual Inspection is a low-code AI learning application that can be easily implemented without the specialized knowledge of a data scientist. By loading a large amount of image data into AI and performing deep learning, we create a learning model that determines the nature of damage for each part of the suitcase, and use that model to automatically detect damage. This has enabled us to automate the image determination of damaged suitcases in insurance claims payment operations, which requires a large amount of human work.

Furthermore, we plan to expand this service to companies other than insurance companies as a variety of compensation services, such as unique compensation systems for suitcase manufacturers and options to compensate checked suitcases when making boarding reservations for airlines, including LCCs.
