Namekawa City, Toyama Prefecture ・Participants
Research students 9 people from 5th grade of elementary school to 2nd grade of junior high school ・Cooperating organizations Wave Namegawa, Yu Aqualife, Project Design Eating and learning together with Suruga Bay Kids! This time, kids from the Deep Sea Research Super Kids Training Project in Suruga Bay are visiting Toyama on an expedition during the three-day weekend from September 21st (Saturday) to September 23rd (Monday/holiday). We held a joint study on the 22nd (Sunday) of Chunichi. At lunch, both kids ate firefly squid, a deep-sea fish that is representative of Toyama Bay, and played a CHANGE FOR THE BLUE card game with the theme “To Eliminate Marine Debris.” Afterwards, the students shared with each other the creatures and things related to the deep sea that they had been interested in, and quizzed each other on Toyama Bay and Suruga Bay, allowing them to have deep and fun learning and interacting with each other.

Deep ocean water and underwater drone experience The kids visited Aqua Pocket, a deep ocean water facility in Namekawa City. They learned about the characteristics of the deep ocean water pumped in Toyama, how to use it, and how it differs from the deep ocean water pumped in Shizuoka. The kids sampled pumped raw water, desalinated water, and highly concentrated water that increased the concentration of raw water from 3% to 15%, allowing them to experience deep ocean water with their tongues. On this day, we were planning to go out to Toyama Bay and use an underwater drone to see the world 300 meters deep under the sea in real time, but unfortunately due to strong winds and heavy rain, we had to abandon our departure and instead decided to take pictures of the deep sea of Toyama Bay that we had previously photographed using an underwater drone. I saw the situation. They couldn’t hide their amazement at the images of not only living things such as the large croaker, the Japanese snail, white shrimp, firefly squid, and spider star, but also trash such as empty cans and snack food bags sinking to the ocean floor.

This is a project that aims to produce world-class marine and deep sea professionals from here in Toyama. Participants receive lectures from professionals in various fields related to the deep sea, and then proceed with in-depth research on themes that interest them. Also, try creating a video reporting your own research results! By experiencing both research and output, we will develop the next generation of marine specialist leaders.
