On August 31, 1945, about 140 houses in the coastal area were washed away by high waves caused by Typhoon Kitty, and the following year, in 1952, there was the Atami Station Fire, and 10 days later, 979 houses in the central area were washed away. After being destroyed by a huge fire, efforts by local citizens continued to rebuild. The festival began in 1952 when fireworks were launched to reward the city’s efforts to rebuild the city. Since then, this tradition has been passed down, and now it is held throughout the year and has become synonymous with Atami. Fireworks vendors also highly praise it!
