Six countries/regions (Russia, China, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and Taiwan) have imposed import restrictions on Japanese agricultural, forestry, and fishery products and food due to the impact of radioactive materials associated with the nuclear power plant accident in the Great East Japan Earthquake on agricultural, livestock, and fishery products. This is still being done today. Among them, Taiwan is the fourth largest export destination for agricultural, forestry and fishery products and food products from Japan, with a value of 153.2 billion yen (2023). In Taiwan, the 2018 referendum resulted in the continuation of the import ban in five prefectures (Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, and Chiba) with 78% approval. After that, in February 2022, imports of only some items from the five prefectures will be suspended. However, even if they are importable items, all items except alcoholic beverages from the five prefectures and designated items from prefectures other than the five prefectures will be suspended. A radioactive substance test report and a certificate of origin are required for all items except alcoholic beverages, and all lots of items from the five prefectures are subject to border inspection at the time of import. The Taiwanese government announced the relaxation of import regulations on September 25, 2024, but the requirements for attaching radioactive substance test reports from five prefectures and certificates of origin from all prefectures have not been relaxed. In order for the Taiwanese government to proceed with the relaxation of import regulations, we believe that it is important to foster understanding among Taiwanese people regarding the safety of Japanese food products. Therefore, for the purpose of risk communication regarding the safety of radioactive materials, and also because we believe it is meaningful to share information with other countries regarding the impact of the nuclear power plant accident in Japan on food and the subsequent countermeasures and current situation, we have established a university in Taiwan. The first food safety course on the theme of “Ensuring the safety of food related to radioactive materials in Japan” will be held as follows. We would appreciate your understanding and support for this course. 1. Event date and time Wednesday, October 9, 2024 13:30-15:00 2.
