In the composition of a screen in Japanese paintings, emphasis is placed on the space between the figure and the blank space, but in his own work, he regards the space between the blank spaces as light and focuses on the ground of the screen, or the “finite space.” The aim was to provide a white ground as light between the infinity, which was originally not touched, and to capture the artist’s sensual feeling by including the subtleties of time, humidity, and seasons. Rather than leaving the spaces and distances between things as they are on canvas, by painting them in white, the seemingly infinite space is illuminated by light and transformed into a finite one. The earth, which is light, influences the figure, and the relationship between the two becomes richer, expressing the lingering feeling of space harmonizing with objects. Instagram| @aika_nagano
