While visiting the Maneki Neko Museum and looking at various samples at Chugai Touen, I let my imagination run wild, but I had no idea how to go about the process of turning a painting into a three-dimensional object. After thinking about it for a while, I thought, “I should try making it myself!” and started kneading the clay. The result was a very misshapen and strange looking cat. But it’s like me, a cat. I sent the sample and had them make many small adjustments over and over until it took shape. The spinning neck is an expression that can only be achieved through three-dimensional objects. We had a lot of fun experimenting with materials that matched each pattern. There’s something deeply moving about watching so many cats being born with Chugai Toen’s careful handwork. I pray that the cats that have many traces of my hands will travel to their respective places and be loved. In conjunction with the exhibition, we also made one-of-a-kind cat tiles. The cat paintings and goods that have been created over the years are also full of cats. Please come and be surrounded by cats. Milo Komachiko
