Furthermore, 24% of developers report that OS development,
certification, and testing has delayed project delivery, resulting in an average time-to-market delay of 1.4 months. “BlackBerry QNX’s Country Sales Director Japan IoT Agarwal Sachin said: “As we enter the era of “Software Defined Everything,” functional safety (FuSa) and security are becoming extremely important. We’re seeing strong security requirements and a strong need for real-time performance, making solutions like BlackBerry QNX even more valuable.” Pressure on developers threatens safety and security The findings suggest that Japanese software engineers and developers, in line with global trends, are faced with the need to compromise critical safety requirements due to deadline urgency. In the Japanese market, 58% of software engineers and developers report that deadline and cost pressures force them to make important safety compromises. Although this is lower than the global average of 75%, it is still a worryingly high number. This situation poses potential risks to product quality and safety, and may affect a company’s reputation and market competitiveness in the long run. Cost issues of obtaining safety certification The cost of obtaining safety certification is a major challenge for Japanese developers. Research shows that Japanese developers require an average of 83 million yen of corporate resources to obtain safety certification. This places a huge burden on many companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, and impacts the speed of innovation and market deployment. Moreover, this high cost investment causes companies to struggle with efficient allocation of resources and can limit investment in other important development areas. Other main findings Impact of security vulnerabilities : Globally, 72% of respondents reported that security vulnerabilities directly delayed project timelines. This high percentage clearly demonstrates the importance of security measures and their impact on the entire product development cycle. Security patch application frequency Although 73% of respondents said they prioritize OS security, the frequency with which security patches are applied varies, with an average of five weeks between updates. This long update interval can make it difficult to respond quickly to new vulnerabilities and increase potential security risks. Delays due to OS-related issues : OS issues have a significant impact on project timelines, with 34% of developers reporting missed deadlines due to OS-related issues. The global average delay is one month, which can delay products to market and reduce competitiveness.
