WWF Japan About MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) We are an international non-profit organization that strives to promote sustainable and properly managed fisheries through certification systems and fisheries eco-labels, in order to preserve marine resources for future generations. Founded in 1997 with its
headquarters in London, it currently operates around the world with offices in approximately 20 countries. MSC Japan was established in 2007. In 2022, more than 20,000 marine products bearing the MSC “Marine Eco Label” were sold in 66 countries around the world, and more than 700 items were sold in Japan. In Japan, it can be purchased at Aeon Group, Co-op, Seven & i Group, McDonald’s, etc. The MSC Fisheries Certification Standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries is widely recognized worldwide and is based on the latest scientific evidence. It is also the only fisheries certification program in the world that meets the requirements of both FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and ISEAL
(International Union for Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labeling). For a fishery to meet this standard, (1) fish stocks are at a sustainable level, (2) the environmental impact of the fishery is minimized, and (3) long-term sustainability is ensured. It is required to demonstrate, through an examination by a third-party examination body, that the management system that ensures this is functioning.
