Takigi Noh performed at the Hojo Experience culture at Ikkyuji Temple Ikkyu-ji Temple is the temple where Zen Master Ikkyu, also known as Ikkyu-san, who is known as the Tonchi Boy, spent his later years. Zen Master Ikkyu ended his life in Takigi-no-chi, Kyotanabe City. As a temple belonging to the Zen sect, Daitokuji of the Rinzai sect, we introduce Zen culture that has been passed down in Japan, including the tea ceremony. In the land of firewood Ikkyuji Takigi Noh is held every fall in the land of Takigi. This year too, seats will be open to the general public. In his later years, Zen Master Ikkyu relocated Toraoka-an from this area in Kyotanabe, where he spent the rest of his life. It is said that cultural figures of the time gathered at Toraokaan because they admired Zen Master Ikkyu. Among them was Zenchiku Konparu, Zeami’s son-in-law. It is said that Zenchiku moved near Shuonan and performed dances at Ikkyu’s invitation. Zenchiku was an extremely talented Noh actor and Noh creator. The place where Konparu Zenchiku danced for Ikkyu was in front of the gate of Shuonan and Ikkyuji Temple, and the place was called Takigisho. The name of this place, “Takigi,” comes from the fact that the firewood used in Shinto rituals at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine was stored here. The dance performed here is said to be the origin of the name Takigi Noh. There is a shrine called Takigi Shrine right next to the west side of the temple, where there is a monument commemorating the origin of Nohgaku. The inscription states, “Noh originated from Takigi Noh, or Konparu Noh, then Hosho Noh and Kanze Noh originated from Osumi, and Kongo Noh originated from Yamato.” Takigi Noh, which is once again a cultural performance in this area, will be held again this year.
