Local people and students gathered to harvest barley Background to the revival of old barley variety “Golden Melon” During the Meiji era, in response to the government’s call for domestic production of beer barley, Ryutaro Tamiya, a farmer in Kyotanabe City, developed a method for cultivating “Golden Melon.” As a result, beer barley production in Kyoto developed dramatically. However, after World War II, major beer manufacturers switched to using imported malt, and beer barley production in Kyotanabe City ceased. Kyoto Golden Melon Club In recent years, with the popularity of craft beer and the growing global reputation of Japanese whiskey, Kyotanabe City has begun to question its reliance on imported malt. Therefore, we have started activities aimed at reviving the cultivation of “Golden Melon” barley and making effective use of the increasing amount of abandoned farmland. Engaged in the entire process from barley cultivation to sales! Contribute to regional revitalization with students’ practical abilities This project started with only 100 seeds, but over a period of four years, we succeeded in increasing the production to 100 kg. Our university will be participating from 2022, the third year of the project. In March 2023, the “Kyoto Golden Melon Club” was launched through collaboration between industry, government, and academia. The students contributed to barley production from seeding to barley treading and harvesting. After that, we developed a craft beer called “Kyo TANABEER Ongorodon Saison,” which is a new specialty of Kyotanabe City, using 100% of the harvested barley. “Kyo TANABEER The name Ongorodon Saison embodies the idea of “let’s protect agriculture and pass on and disseminate local culture while introducing the new style of beer.” A beer with a fruity aroma and spicy taste. In 2023, we will use crowdfunding to raise manufacturing funds and achieve our goal of 600,000 yen. Furthermore, in July 2024, the Kyotanabe Craft Beer Festival 2024 was held at Brunch Matsui Yamate, a commercial facility in the city. The students held an on-site sale to introduce craft beer to the local people, and the beer sold out in just about an hour and was well received by visitors. Students from Setsunan University’s Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of International Studies are involved in the entire process, from growing barley to brewing and selling it. He is contributing to the revival of the Golden Melon by leveraging his knowledge of agricultural technology and brewing, as well as his practical skills in marketing and regional cooperation. Through our activities, we aim to eliminate abandoned farmland, revitalize local communities, and contribute to the creation of a new food culture in Kyoto. Kyoto Food Tech Expo 2024 will feature the following themes: “Create Drink Protect Farmland “Kyo TANABEER” ~ Make craft beer with old variety barley and revitalize the people and farmland of Kyotanabe City! We plan to provide a detailed introduction to our activities. From now on, we are planning to sow barley seeds on the farmland in the Kyotanabe Osumi area on November 23rd.
