Odawara City Press release: October 2, 2024 [Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture] 2020 Odawara Castle Castle Special Exhibition “There was a zoo in the castle – 26,738 days at Odawara Zoo” In 1955, the Odawara Children’s Cultural Expo was held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Odawara City, and the Odawara Zoo opened at the same time. A special exhibition will be held at the Odawara Castle Tower to look back on the history of the much-missed Odawara Zoo, which closed last year.

It also contributed to species conservation, including breeding and emergency protection of wild animals. On the other hand, as castle ruins progressed, with the castle ruins becoming a nationally designated historic site in 1950 and the castle tower being rebuilt the following year, the zoo began to shrink in size from 2005, and the animals were transferred one after another from all over the country. It was taken to a zoo. The last remaining Japanese macaque was taken in by Higashi Tsukuba Utopia in Ibaraki Prefecture in December 2020, and Odawara Zoo was closed.
