After learning photography by himself, he traveled to Africa alone in 2009. Since then, he has photographed and presented images of ethnic minorities around the world, including Africa. In recognition of his unique colors and intuitive way of life, in 2017 he was selected by Nikkei Business magazine as one of the “100 people who will create the next
generation” and in the magazine PEN’s “Pen Creator Award 2017.” Received the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award Photography Award. In 2020, he published “Dragqueen-No Light, No Queen”, which featured drag queens as new subjects. He has also appeared in numerous commercials including Beats By Dr Dre and Uniqlo. He started wrestling at the age of 3 in a junior class held by his father, Eikatsu, at his home dojo. In 2002, he won the world championship for the first time and won 13 consecutive championships until 2015. He won three consecutive Olympic titles from the 2004 Athens Games to the 2012 London Games. In 2012, he won 13 consecutive world championships, including the Olympics and world championships, and received the People’s Honor Award. Silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He has won 16 consecutive world championships and 206 consecutive wins in individual competitions. In January 2019, he announced his retirement after 33 years of active duty.
