Shu Honda《Beast》Oil on canvas, acrylic 970mm x 1455mm 2022 CASHI will be holding a two-person exhibition titled “Astral Communication” by Takeshi Hyakuzu and Shu Honda from November 1st (Friday) to November 22nd (Friday). According to one theory, the “ghost world” is a world between life and death, and is a place where people temporarily stay after passing away. On the other hand, the “spirit world” refers to the place beyond the “ghost world” where the dead spend eternity. Within the “spirit world,” there is the “heaven,” where good spirits live, and the “hell,” where evil spirits live. It is said that there are two locations. Hyakuzu and Honda are both artists who capture landscapes that have a certain mysterious element that exist in the suburbs of Japan. The title of the exhibition, “Astral Communication,” comes from the fact that their works give the impression of irregularly received messages from the astral world, captured in the form of paintings and photographs, and presented to us. Hyakuzu is an artist born in Gunma in 1980, who researches and photographs the landscapes of industrial waste piled up in the suburbs, which he calls “junkyards.” Major exhibitions include the solo exhibition “Toren” (Token Art Center, Tokyo, 2023), VOCA Exhibition 2018 “Prospects of Contemporary Art – Artists of a New Plane” (Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, 2018), “Impurities and Immunity” (Tokyo Arts and Space Hongo, Tokyo, 2017). Honda is a writer born in Saitama Prefecture in 1997, who gently affirms the existence of monsters that he has been familiar with since childhood, and who detects signs of monsters in his gaze and depicts them. At the Tokyo University of the Arts 2024 Graduation Exhibition (Tokyo University of the Arts, Tokyo), he attracted attention for a group of works with monster motifs that he created while studying for a master’s degree. Finally, I would like to quote “Nezumi” from the poetry collection of the same name, “Ghost Communication” (written by Shizuko Machida, published by Jikensha in 1954). “Mouse group” The old town was taken away The iron bone that grasps the darkness of the hole Potsunen was left in the middle of the population At the top of the department store The yellow moon rises I was chased from my hometown A group of mice gradually ascends to heaven From “Ghost Communication” (written by Shizuko Machida, published by Jikensha, 1954) Please take a look at our unique world view where the physical world and the astral world intersect.
