In 1930, the Kaninnomiya family, one of the Shinomiya families of the Edo period, built a villa in Gora as a summer resort. In 1948, it was opened as “Gora Kadan” by the Kaninnomiya family. Built on a site of approximately 1,000 square meters that shows off the beauty of each season, the architecture is a fusion of Japanese tradition and modernity, creating a comfortable space where you can feel one with nature. In 1991, we became a member of the world-famous hotel and restaurant group Relais & Châteaux after careful screening, and in 2002 we received the Welcome Trophy, which is given to facilities that meet high customer satisfaction and high service standards. The award was selected from among 469 (at that time) facilities around the world that are members of Relais & Châteaux. In July 2024, it became the first hotel in Asia to receive the “3 Michelin Key,” the highest award given to only six facilities in Japan, and has received high praise from guests from Japan and abroad. [About the Kaninnomiya family] The Kaninnomiya family was founded in 1710 with Emperor Higashiyama’s son, Imperial Prince Naohito, as its founder, and is one of the four successive imperial families, and is a venerable imperial family that produced Emperor Kokaku, the
great-great-grandfather of Emperor Meiji. Imperial Prince Zahito, the sixth head of the Kaninnomiya family, studied abroad in France in 1883, graduating from the Cavalry School in Saumur and the prestigious Saint-Cyr Military Academy, founded by Napoleon and attended by Charles de Gaulle. The Prince spent a lot of time in France, and in 1930 he built a summer residence in Gora, Hakone Town. After Imperial Prince Haruhito, the son of Imperial Prince Haruhito, renounced the imperial status, the villa was renamed Gora Kadan and opened as a hotel in 1948.
