Jimbocho Theater, a masterpiece theater in the city of books, spotlights works from various angles such as directors, performers, and themes, and shows good old Japanese movies on film. This time, we are screening a special feature on the genius Kara Juro (1940-2024), a playwright, director, actor, and Akutagawa Prize-winning author. Kara graduated from Meiji University’s Faculty of Letters, Department of Letters, Department of Theater Studies, and led the postwar theater world as an “underground standard-bearer” due to his radical activities such as red tent performances at Shinjuku Hanazono Shrine and guerilla performances at Shinjuku West Exit. His talent was highly praised in the literary world, winning the Kishida Drama Award in 1970 for “Shoujo Kamen,” the Izumi Kyoka Literary Award in 1978 for “Kaisei Kappa,” and the Akutagawa Prize in 1983 for “Letter from Sagawa-kun.” It was done. As an actor, his performances in films by world-famous directors such as Nagisa Oshima and Shohei Imamura are legendary, leaving a strong impression on viewers. This special feature is a project by Meiji University student volunteers who are from the Tang Dynasty, and this is Jimbocho Theater’s first attempt at a joint project with students from a local university. A mysterious figure who carved his name in the history of Japanese entertainment and literature with his unique talent – we will unravel his activities through a screening of the film.
