Headquarters, Deloitte Tohmatsu Financial Advisory LLC Partner/ We welcomed Ms. Yasuko Otsuka, Head of Sustainability Advisory, and held a diversity lecture titled “Thinking about diversity from the perspective of brain bias” at the main building of our university’s Tsushima campus.  The theme of the lecture was “Let’s accept diversity,” and when we compared a highly homogeneous group with a group that accepted heterogeneous attributes, we found that even though the highly homogeneous group made incorrect decisions, First, there is a tendency for people in groups to be highly satisfied and confident in their own decisions, the risks of highly homogeneous groups making decisions based on the same values, and the effects that stereotypes and biases have on the brain. There was an
easy-to-understand and impressive explanation of the negative effects based on findings from brain research.  In addition, the psychological burden that women face when they are a minority in a group, and the proportion of women among university faculty members in Japan, are the lowest among comparable OECD member countries, with Japan being the only country with less than 30%. The participants listened intently to explanations aimed at universities that were conscious of global trends, such as that the diversity of faculty has a positive impact on students.  This lecture was attended by approximately 40 people, including executives and department heads responsible for the management and operation of our university, and was a very meaningful opportunity to think about diversity. Please look forward to the continued efforts of Okayama University, a regional core and distinctive research university. Image
