Photography: Rintaro Fuse InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8 (2-14-1 Shinko, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture), located at Shinko Pier in Minato Mirai, Yokohama, is a serial project “Futo, at the Pier” that started in August 2024. Miyu Kotani, a model and writer, served as the curator, and Kotani invited guests who felt that she would like to read an essay about her stay written from this person’s perspective to the hotel. This project asks participants to write an essay expressing their impressions of the charm of the hotel and Yokohama using photos and life-sized words. Mr. Kotani, who wrote an essay for his first stay, invited artist Rintaro Fuse as his second guest. During his stay, Mr. Fuse was holding an exhibition at a gallery that has been in operation for over 50 years in Yokohama. Mr. Fuse, who has many opportunities to stay at hotels in various areas due to his work, shares what he felt while relaxing at the hotel on the pier, and the various thoughts and musings that came to mind triggered by things he saw while taking a walk around the hotel. He wrote about the events and emotions that occurred over the course of 2 nights and 3 days, such as the dinner he had at a hotel while he was alone, and the emotions that arose from his unique perspective as an artist. This newly written essay will be published on the hotel’s website from October 28, 2024. By reading the essay, please feel as if you are spending the same time in the same room as Mr. Fuse. The next essay, “Suddenly, at the Pier”, is scheduled to be published around January 2025. Please look forward to how our new guests spend their winter at hotels and in Yokohama. [Comment from Rintaro Fuse] -Please tell us what made you decide to participate in the project- “First of all, I had several connections to the city of Yokohama.The first time I tried to write on my own was to write down my experience at the Yokohama Triennale in 2011, and when I was a graduate student, I went to a school near Motomachi-Chukagai Station, and I wanted to write about the aspects of the city that I didn’t know about yet.” -About Yokohama’s impressions and how interesting it was to stay at the hotel- “I felt that the careful series of events that are typical of hotels is interesting even in a city where I live or am familiar with it.I already had various impressions of Yokohama, but… I had never had the experience of being treated as a ‘guest’, so it was a series of surprises as the scenery turned upside down from inside the hotel.” -A message to the readers- “First, I recommend walking to a nearby pier.I would be happy if the “InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8” that comes to mind through my essay comes up as a place to stay with your loved ones someday. ” [Rintaro Fuse Artist] Born in 1994.
