co-sponsored by Shibuya City, this is an initiative to provide opportunities for people involved in Shibuya to discover their own roles and possibilities, and participate in the creation of a future society. Feeling of confinement faced by people in their 20s and 30s: New challenges brought about by the SNS era One of the major issues faced by people in their 20s and 30s today is the feeling of being stuck. With the spread of digital tools such as SNS, young people have more opportunities than ever to express themselves, but at the same time, the psychological pressure brought on by excessive comparison with others is increasing. A Nippon Foundation survey (*1) found that many young people in their 20s and 30s feel that it is difficult to have hope for the future, and even compared to young people in six countries, people in Japan believe that the future will get better. Only 13.9% of young people feel this way. Furthermore, a Cabinet Office survey (*2) confirms the trend of “low self-esteem,” making it clear that young people are unable to find value in themselves and are losing interest in society and politics. In addition,
psychological hurdles are high when it comes to taking on new challenges, and a Unipos survey (*3) found that 84% of people in their 20s and 30s were “afraid of losing their reputation” or “worried that the reputation of those around them would change.” It has become clear that they are reluctant to take on the challenge for several reasons. These facts highlight the current situation where a “society where failure is not tolerated” and “fear of evaluation” restrain young people’s behavior. A sense of closure has the effect of decreasing interest in local communities and politics As the success and happiness of others can be instantly visualized through social media, young people tend to feel a sense of impatience in wanting to achieve results quickly, and this is also contributing to a decline in interest in local communities and politics. According to statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (*4), the turnout rate among people in their 20s in recent national elections has been only around 30%. Many of us live in environments where it is difficult to have this awareness. The decline in interest in local communities and politics is often attributed to the declining population due to the declining birthrate, but this “atmosphere that does not allow challenges” and “invisible competition” are also suppressing the actions of young people. This may also be a factor. Solutions proposed by Shibuya: SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK 2024 and Shibuya-kei 16 type diagnosis In order to take on these social issues, Shibuya Mirai Design is holding SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK 2024 (SIW2024) and presenting a new framework for connecting the local community and young people. SIW2024 is an event held by Shibuya Mirai Design with the aim of drawing a “sustainable urban future” by involving various sectors (residents, companies, local governments, educational institutions, culture). In conjunction with this event, we released the “Shibuya-kei 16 Type Diagnosis,” which promotes community participation as “one’s own thing,” and provided a place for people in their 20s and 30s to rediscover their own roles and strengths. Discovering innovative human resources by 16 types of Shibuya type diagnosis “Shibuya Kei 16 Type Diagnosis” uses a personality test as a hook to not only help SIW2024 participants discover their roles related to Shibuya, but also to encourage them to realize that they are the ones who bring about change in society. This diagnosis provides an opportunity to find the direction of innovation that suits you, and by visualizing the roles of the 16 types of “Shibuya people,” many people can give concrete form to their ideas, and local governments, companies, and individuals can We provide a place to build new collaborations. Utilize “personality diagnosis” to strengthen reach to young people (20s and 30s) Shibuya Mirai Design focused on the 16 personality types that people in their 20s and 30s use as a means of self-understanding and self-analysis. For example, a MERY survey (*5) showed that people in their 30s and younger are more than twice as likely to use MBTI diagnosis as people in their 40s and older, and the number of young people learning about their diagnosis through social media is rapidly increasing. . By having fun
discovering their “own role” through this diagnosis, we aim to help young people become more aware of the development of their communities and society. Psychological effects of personality tests Research shows that personality tests can have positive psychological effects by increasing self-awareness and metacognition. (※6) By categorizing yourself through diagnosis, you can reaffirm your own characteristics and strengths and gain confidence and peace of mind. Psychologically, this is said to lead to an improvement in “self-efficacy,” which increases people’s motivation to believe in their own abilities and work even in difficult situations. In addition, clarifying “what is suitable for you” through the diagnosis results will lead to improved self-awareness and strengthened metacognitive abilities. By improving metacognition, we hope to have the effect of increasing the
flexibility of problem-solving and the desire to take on challenges, and making it easier for young people who feel stuck to become more aware of community participation. What is “Shibuya-kei 16 type diagnosis”? This diagnosis categorizes what kind of Shibuya person you are (a person who lives, works, studies, or visits) in the form of “Shibuya-kei”, and what kind of “possibility of creating a future” you are by being involved in Shibuya.
