In 2022, we will hold an exhibition of two great masters with Mr. Takeshi Kitamura, a master of the dyeing and weaving world and holder of the important intangible cultural property “Ra/Keinishiki” (Living National Treasure), realizing an unprecedented collaboration. The century-old collaboration (pictured on the right), in which Mr. Kitamura wove the Sutra Nishiki cloth and Mr. Moriguchi dyed it using the Yuzen technique, has attracted a lot of attention as a fusion of traditional technology and innovation, and is a great opportunity for the next generation of creators. It inspired me. In addition, Mr. Moriguchi provided the Yuzen homongi design for Mitsukoshi’s renewed shopping bags in 2014, and in 2019 created a precious box in collaboration with Van Cleef & Arpels, which combines modern society and tradition. We have been carrying out activities to connect the two. His works are stored in museums both in Japan and abroad, and are disseminating the world-renowned value of Japanese culture in a new way. In this exhibition, we invite you to experience the beauty of Japan spun into the future through Mr. Moriguchi’s Yuzen expressions, which continue to challenge the boundaries of tradition.

Studied graphic design at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, graduating in 1966. After returning to Japan, he learned Yuzen techniques under his father, Mr. Kahiro Moriguchi, who was a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in “Yuzen”, and in 2007 was certified as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property in “Yuzen”. Since then, he has received the Order of the Rising Sun in 2013 and was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2020. Received the Legion of Honor Commander of the French Republic in 2021. In 2023, we will create the “Precious Box” in collaboration with the French jeweler “Van Cleef & Arpels”. His works are held in museum collections in Japan and abroad, including the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, as well as the Center Pompidou (Paris, France) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, England). While his father, Kahiro Moriguchi, has a style based on the classical beauty of flowers, birds, wind and moon, Kunihiko has mastered graphic expression using geometric patterns.

Opens 2 stores. We introduce the wonders of Japanese handicrafts through carefully selected kimonos and obi (dyed and woven products) collected from all over Japan, including works by living national treasures and important intangible cultural properties. In addition, we offer “manufacturing with a visible face” that allows you to see the production history of each thread using the world’s first purely domestic male silkworm variety “Platinum Boy”, and we also create a one-of-a-kind kimono made from silkworms. The hands-on project “Platinum Boy Story”. We have set up an Oshima Tsumugi loom in the store, where you can watch weavers actually weaving the cloth, and hold regular talk sessions with creators. We value conveying in our own words what we see with our eyes, hear with our ears, touch with our hands, and deliver the stories behind the kimono. http://www.motoji.co.jp/
