“Enjoy the World of Kinkarakami at the Former Iwasaki-tei” will be held at the Former Iwasaki-tei garden, which is a nationally designated important cultural property.
On the 2nd floor of our Western-style building, there is a guest room with a precious wallpaper called “Golden leather paper”, which has been very well received by visitors.
For a limited time, we will be holding an exhibition focusing on the “Kinkarakashi Paper”. Please enjoy the romantic world of kinkarakami in the Kyu-Iwasaki-tei garden.

Kinkarakami and Kinkarakami
This is a reproduction of Japanese paper made from animal skins in Europe. During the Meiji period, gold leather paper was widely used in Europe and the United States.
It was highly acclaimed in Japan, and was actively exported as a Japanese art industry. However, in the early Showa period, new technologies appeared and demand increased.
Due to the decline in demand, it has become a lost craft.
Around the end of the Showa era, there was a movement to revive the once-discontinued technique of making gold leather paper, and art related to cultural properties
Takashi Ueda (representative of Kinkarakami Research Institute), who was in charge of printing, succeeded in restoring it. Renewing the once-lost kinkarakashi paper
We call it “Kinkarakami” with the meaning of “revived”.

This time, the scale of the exhibition has been scaled up from previous years, and it has been used for the restoration of important cultural properties in various places since around 1985.
“Kinkarakami patterns will be on display.” In addition, there are framed pictures and panels with paintings made using the technique of kinkarakami, and the wind used in tea ceremonies.
“Furnace folding screens will also be on display.” Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the time and enjoy the gorgeous world of
Kinkarakami.

“Paulownia” etc.
・ Panels – In addition to the “Rural Landscape” used on the ceiling of the VIP room of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater, “Hunter” and “Rose Pattern”

“Swirl pattern” etc.
・Screen – “Flower and curve pattern” used in the garden of the former Iwasaki residence, “Chrysanthemum pattern” used in the former Nippon Yusen Otaru branch, etc.

About the Former Iwasaki Residence Garden
A nationally designated important cultural property. It was completed in 1896 as the residence of Hisaya Iwasaki, the third president and the eldest son of Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of Mitsubishi Zaibatsu. In the past, more than 20 buildings stood side by side on the site of 15,000 tsubo, but now the site area is reduced to one-third. Three large halls remain.
