BAG plans and holds exhibitions with the theme of “Life and Art.” Family crests have been passed down in Japan since ancient times and are familiar to daily life as symbols of each family and clan. This exhibition will display the works of two designers from “Kyogen,” who are responsible for the design of this family crest. Kyogen was founded in Kyobashi in 1910 by Genji Hatoba, the founder of the company, as a “Monnoriya” craftsman who was responsible for the process of painting family crests on kimonos. The second generation became a “monsho uwaeshi” who hand-painted family crests on kimonos, and the tradition was passed on to the third generation, Shoryu Hadoba, and his son, Yoho. In 2010, the father and son Shoryu and Yoho launched the workshop “Kyogen”, which introduced digital technology to traditional hand-painting techniques to create new expressions using family crests, fusing traditional designs with modern sensibilities. oriented. 2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of the third generation, Shoryu Hatoba, taking over the family business. This exhibition looks back at the history of Kyogen, which began in Kyobashi, with the hope that the connection between the world of family crest art and the land of Kyobashi will continue indefinitely. Exhibition contents The works of the father and son Shoryu and Yoho that will be introduced in this exhibition have a unique world, including “Mon Mandala (R),” in which curved parts are meticulously drawn using digital tools. All family crests are made up of circles and lines, and the traditional technique is to draw the circles and lines in ink using a bamboo compass, ruler, glass rod, and overpaint brush called “Bunmawashi.” Kyogen’s designs, which fuse traditional designs and modern
sensibilities, are provided to a variety of companies and brands, regardless of genre, such as clothing accessories and label design.In addition to such collaborative works, this exhibition will feature original works.
