At Lord Hideyoshi’s request, it is a dry landscape garden covered in moss, with an empty pond in the shape of a gourd, a military standard, in the foreground, and Korean lanterns and other objects handed down by Kiyomasa Kato. This is one of the gardens where you can get a glimpse of Sen no Rikyu’s various talents and qualities not only in the world of tea but also as a multi-purpose creator.

During the Momoyama period, Toshiie Maeda, who served as one of the five chief elders of the Toyotomi government, restored the roof of the main hall and made it a family temple, making it a temple with strong ties to the Maeda family. It has a main hall with an elegant and stable appearance that gives a sense of
tranquility and calm, and a hojo garden restored by Kinsaku Nakane, a gardener known as the “Kobori Enshu of the Showa era.” Every year, azaleas bloom in the garden from around mid-May.

Wave-shaped renzi windows and flower-headed windows in the reception area are part of the architectural style of Zen Buddhism. Daitokuji Sokenin Daitoku-ji Soken-in Temple was built by Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi as a memorial service for Oda Nobunaga, who had fallen in the Honno-ji Incident. The wooden seated statue of Oda Nobunaga (an important cultural property) was built for his funeral. This is a temple with a historical background that was built by Hideyoshi to seize control during the political struggle after Nobunaga’s death.
