“Develop reading skills with PBL! Lesson study seminar on narrative texts” Teachers from Aomori and Osaka who participate in the teacher training platform “Classroom Terrace” operated by NIJIN Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Tatsuro Hoshino) present the results of their one and a half year of research in “PBL”. We will be holding a “Narrative Text Lesson Study Seminar” to develop your reading skills. ■Joint research by faculty members participating in class terrace Classroom Terrace member teachers from Aomori and Osaka prefectures will present their Japanese language teaching practices, which they have spent over a year and a half researching on “Activities that utilize PBL to proactively read stories.” Through weekly one-hour online meetings, we have repeatedly discussed research themes, objectives, methods, and verification methods. At this event, we will present the results of a study conducted by teachers who are far away from each other to think seriously about children’s growth and discuss what it means for children to read independently.

We then made a plan based on our goals and held a verification class at the end. At the end of the class, the children from Aomori and Osaka exchanged opinions about reading story materials online. The children looked satisfied as they shared their analyzes with each other about what they had read. ■What you can do in class terrace “Kyoshu Terrace,” a training platform for 500 active teachers, has been carrying out various initiatives by taking advantage of the presence of teachers all over the country. In each case, we have taken advantage of online activities to connect classrooms and increase learning effectiveness. I will introduce some of them. ・Classes to improve your ability to introduce and communicate local specialties to each other in Japanese ・In social studies, a class where you can communicate the characteristics of cold and warm lands and learn about lifestyles and industries that take advantage of the climate ・Classes that raised disaster prevention awareness by communicating about the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake during comprehensive study time Taking advantage of these
opportunities, new classes have been proposed. ■Develop independent reading skills “Raising children who learn independently” That is a big goal for any teacher in the education world. This time, we took on this major goal by taking advantage of the PBL format. This event is a seminar to introduce this teaching practice. As a form of PBL, the main role of learning is entrusted to small groups of children. In an effort to make children more independent, we have set up “time to feel the background” and “time to read the background” of the story. The “time to get a sense of the background” served as a perspective to deepen the understanding of the questions, and was also a time to make the children want to read the descriptions in the textbook. I was also able to deepen my understanding of the story by spending time reading the background. By reading the background, I was able to read closely to the theme of the story. ■What is PBL? It is said that American educationist John Dewey first put this into practice in educational settings. Also known as “problem-solving learning,” it is an educational method that aims to develop the ability for children and students to solve problems on their own, rather than passive learning such as memorizing knowledge. According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology’s 2015 “Related Materials on Qualities and Abilities, etc.,” “In order to respond to an unpredictable future, we should not respond passively to social changes, but proactively face and interact with them, and through the process… It is important for each person to maximize their potential and create a better society and a happier life for themselves.” Therefore, emphasis has been placed on realizing “independent, interactive, and deep learning,” and PBL learning has started to attract attention in the Japanese educational world. PBL can be divided into two types: project based learning and problem based learning (tutorial type), but in this practice, we decided to use the “tutorial type” as it is highly compatible with subject learning. ■Event overview Date and time: November 14, 2024 (Wednesday) 20:00-21:00 Holding method: Online Fixed number of people: 30 people Target audience: Mainly elementary and junior high school teachers and education personnel Apply: https://peatix.com/event/3698453 Class terrace An online training platform for teachers used by over 500 elementary and junior high school teachers from 47 prefectures nationwide. 96% of members who use this unique method that allows them to shift to child-centered classes have improved their teaching skills and experienced a positive impact on students.
