Sea and Japan Project Public Relations Office Press release: November 7, 2024 “Spo GOMI Koshien 2024 Kanagawa Prefecture Tournament” winning team “Komyo Garbage Busters” Students from Komyo Gakuen Sagamihara High School paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Kobayashi (Naka Ward, Yokohama City) Friday, November 1, 2024 [Location: Yokohama City Naka Ward Office] “Spo GOMI Koshien” is an event in which high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 form teams of three, pick up trash within a designated area within a 60-minute time limit, and compete for points based on quality and quantity. The purpose of this event is to encourage people to take on the problem of trash in their towns and oceans as their own, by having fun picking up trash with friends as a gentle sport. Komyo Gakuen Sagamihara High School (Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Principal: Masahide Amano), a group of three current students, “Komyo Garbage Busters” won the “Spo GOMI Koshien 2024 Kanagawa Prefecture Tournament” held on September 15, 2024. We paid a courtesy visit to Eiji Kobayashi, Mayor of Naka Ward, Yokohama City, to report on the results of the conference. This event was held as part of the marine litter countermeasure project “Ocean and Japan Project – CHANGE FOR THE BLUE” promoted by the Nippon Foundation, and planned by the Social Sports Foundation.

I’m really happy to have won, and the fact that I was able to achieve it together with my teammates makes it even more special. Through the event, I noticed that there was a lot of plastic waste and cigarette butts, and I realized the impact that people have on the garbage problem. I also realized the importance of taking action. Even in the national competition, I want to do my best with the mindset of cleaning up both the city and the ocean.
