OIL by Bijutsu Techo Gallery (2nd floor, Shibuya PARCO, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) will hold the 5th Anniversary Exhibition “Urban and Nature” from November 15th (Friday) to commemorate the 5th anniversary of its opening. A total of 24 artists participated in the exhibition. The first half will be Part 1 “City” (11/15-28), and the second half will be Part 2 “Nature” (12/1-16), with a total of over 50 works created under each theme. Exhibition purpose OIL by Bijutsu Techo Gallery, which opened in 2019 with the renewal of Shibuya PARCO, will celebrate its 5th anniversary this November. This gallery has held over 80 exhibitions so far. Together with many artists, we have been disseminating the charm of art from Shibuya. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the unique environment of being inside a commercial facility, we have aimed to create a place where people visiting Shibuya can easily come into contact with art. To celebrate our 5th anniversary, we will hold the 5th Anniversary Exhibition “Urban and Nature”. This exhibition brings together the works of 24 artists who have previously shown at OIL by Bijutsu Techo Gallery. Artists will present works freely associated with the themes of Part 1 “City” (11/15-28) and Part 2 “Nature” (12/1-16). We worked hard to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, including temporarily closing Shibuya PARCO and changing the way exhibitions and events are held at galleries. It was an experience where I was exposed to a natural threat called a virus. Since we returned to normal business hours, we have had many customers visit from many places in Japan and overseas, and the range of artists we can exhibit has expanded rapidly. Shibuya, where our gallery is located, is located in the center of the city, but is an area where the fusion and contrast between the city and nature stands out. The clutter around Shibuya Station, where many tourists and graffiti come and go, and the tranquility of Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park are probably symbolic views of Shibuya. For the past five years, the artists and I have been engaging with cities and nature, experiencing the symbolic structures of cities and the resilience of nature. Therefore, we decided to set these two themes and ask each artist to reinterpret them and create works. We hope that you will discover new “cities and nature” from the scenery they have seen.
