The booth also included a corner where visitors could experience and learn about the importance of the ocean. The sand we prepared was beach sand collected from the local Sukumojima Island, which is close to the venue. Although the sand looks clean at first glance, there is actually a lot of garbage hidden inside. The children were asked to sift the sand and see what kind of garbage was left behind in the sieve. We also had students discover small granular plastics (microplastics) in the sand that passed through the sieve. While showing them this trash, the staff explained that most of the trash is what we use on land, that plastics get smaller and smaller but never return to the soil, and that
microplastics are passed on to humans through fish and shellfish. We explained that there is a possibility of people eating them, and that if things continue as they are, the weight of marine debris may exceed the weight of fish by 2050. Parents and children were surprised and shocked when they heard the explanation. It seems to have served as a place for parents to learn from each other and to think about the current state of the ocean.
