“Saio’s Garden: Flowers of the Sky and Wind” is a project that Meiwa Kanko Shosha (Head Office: Meiwa Kanko Shosha, Taki District, Mie Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as Meiwa Kanko Shosha), a general incorporated association that promotes the development of a tourist area in Meiwa Town, is working with local residents. We will be holding our 4th flower planting event. “Saio’s Garden Sky and Wind Flower Garden” started four years ago as a way to utilize the vast site of the Saiku, a nationally designated historic site, by creating a flower garden with a Saigu theme. Since then, it has been run together with local residents, and this year local junior high school students will be participating. We will continue to work with the local community to create a virtuous cycle of utilizing and preserving the Saiku ruins through flower displays. Creating a virtuous cycle of preserving and utilizing the Saiku ruins, a nationally designated historic site, starting with flower displays A major challenge for the sustainable tourism region development that Meiwa Town is promoting is the “preservation and utilization” of the Saiku ruins, a nationally designated historical site that covers a vast area. As part of that utilization, we started with the aim of attracting customers through flowers. Furthermore, by operating the site in collaboration with local residents, we are working to foster a sense of acceptance among local residents for tourists, even though Saiku is not a tourist destination. Furthermore, we are developing new initiatives starting from flower blooming efforts, such as creating safe and secure soil without using chemical fertilizers, and local residents taking the initiative in making compost from food waste. A cycle is being created. Opportunity for tourism education for children This flower planting event is Meiwa Junior High School students participated on November 9th I will. This event is held as part of Meiwa Junior High School’s “Meiwa Hometown Experience Learning” program to discover the characteristics and good points of Meiwa Town. “Meiwa hometown experiential learning” will explore the history and traditions of Meiwa Town while doing on-site learning, acquire the ability to communicate the charm of Meiwa Town, and lead to the development of children who love and are proud of Meiwa. We hope that this will be the case, and will be implemented in stages starting this year. Before planting flowers, Meiwa Junior High School students were given a class to think about why they are working on this flower display and why Meiwa Town is working to create a tourist area, and they were encouraged to use the flower display as an opportunity to promote tourism education. What is sustainable tourism area development? Sustainable tourism is “tourism that takes full account of current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, while being responsive to the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and the communities that host them.” Meiwa Town is also a town that continues to be chosen by both residents and visitors, so residents are taking the lead in revitalizing the area and passing on traditional events. Meiwa Kanko Shosha is working to attract tourists through the Jingu Gateway Project, and is also focusing on making the Ise Kaido more lively, revitalizing the area around the shrine, and fostering a love of the local area among children. Through these efforts, we aim to preserve and utilize cultural assets such as the National Historic Site Saiku Ruins, pseudoleather paper, and miitoori, and pass on the history and culture of the region to the next generation, enriching the lives of residents.
