HOSOO GALLERY will be holding a special exhibition titled “Gardens and Textiles – The Shades of Shadows.” In this exhibition, Japanese garden and Nohgaku researcher Rurihiko Hara, architectural design studio ALTEMY, and HOSOO’s Nishijin-ori artisans collaborated to create a comprehensive collection of textiles, video, and sound with the theme of Japanese gardens. We will be unveiling an installation. In this project, in collaboration with Hara’s garden archive project*, we will build an archive in various ways, including conducting 3D scanning of the courtyard of HOSOO’s textile workshop HOUSE of HOSOO, located in Nishijin, Kyoto, over a 12-month period. Based on this data, we have conducted ongoing discussions and experiments over the past three years in order to express the ever-changing appearance of the garden through textiles. Textiles and gardens have existed in many cultures since ancient times, and both are spatial and physical devices that reconfigure natural elements. Gardens, as exemplified by Karesansui gardens, are made of stones that do not change over time, but they also have ponds, streams, trees, and flowers, giving them a different look each season. On the other hand, since ancient times, textiles have been made from threads made from natural materials, dyed with colors, and created with patterns derived from nature. Also, just like the garden, the textiles are made up of layers layered at different times. Warps are synchronic, like stones in a garden, while wefts are diachronic, like plants and flowers, by weaving threads of different colors into each weave to change the look of the fabric. It is an element. The textiles on display at this exhibition use special foil threads, and the weft threads do not have a specific color. The colors only emerge when the viewer changes their perspective under special lighting. This special foil thread is one of the results of the joint research and development project “Ambient Weaving” that HOSOO has been conducting since 2020 with Yasuaki Kakei Laboratory of the University of Tokyo and ZOZO NEXT Co., Ltd. This allows the fabric to take on a dynamic expression through the phenomenon of color. This exhibition presents a new perspective on gardens and textiles, expressing the multilayered layers of time, the interplay of light and shadow, stillness and movement, through installations using video and textiles. * The Garden Archive Project is a research project that collects information on Japanese gardens, which have developed in a variety of ways as an interface between people and the natural environment since ancient times, and creates new interpretations of Japanese gardens based on that history. “Incompete Niwa Archives Endless Garden Archive”
