aquaculture industry due to its unstable supply and rising costs. Superworm Co., Ltd. is focusing on the possibility of using
superworms, which have high nutritional value and fast growth in nature, as a protein source to replace fishmeal. This joint research aims to improve the sustainability of the feed and aquaculture industries by verifying the effectiveness of superworms in supporting the health and growth of farmed fish as part of compounded seafood feed. Research details In collaboration with a research team from Kagoshima University, we will analyze the nutritional value and effectiveness of seafood feed made from superworms. Specifically, this includes: 1. Detailed analysis of nutritional ingredients: We will precisely analyze the amino acid composition, fatty acid profile, vitamins and minerals contained in super worms, and perform
nutritional comparisons with fishmeal. 2. Verification of
effectiveness as feed: We will feed feed containing super worms to farmed fish, observe the effects on growth rate, digestion and absorption rate, and health status, and verify its effectiveness when compared to fishmeal. 3. Evaluation of economic efficiency and environmental impact: Based on the mass production system and production efficiency of superworms, we will evaluate their economic efficiency as feed, and also analyze their impact on the environment, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable production methods. Expected research results and future prospects It is expected that this research will provide concrete data on the effectiveness of compound feed for seafood using superworms. This will not only scientifically evaluate its quality and efficiency as a fishmeal substitute, but also demonstrate its potential as a sustainable feed resource. In addition, by developing new feed that supports the health and growth of farmed fish, it will be possible to contribute to improving the sustainability of the aquaculture industry as a whole. Joint research destination: Kagoshima University Innovation of fishmeal alternative compound feed with Professor Kotani Professor Kotani of Kagoshima University’s Faculty of Fisheries Research is researching the cultivation and utilization of Shiomizu rotifers (hereinafter referred to as rotifers), which are used as initial biological feed in the production of marine fish seedlings. Recently, we have successfully created a rotifer paste made by mass culturing rotifers and straining the water to create a mixed feed for fish without the use of fishmeal. We have also confirmed its effectiveness by using it on red sea bream and yellowtail. However, creating this mixed feed costs several dozen times more than using fishmeal, so there is a need to cut costs. In this project, we will be in charge of the use of superworms as a raw material for compounded feed, and we will also try to eliminate fish meal and reduce costs by using rotifer paste and superworms. About the efforts of Super Worm Co., Ltd. Since its founding, Superworm Co., Ltd. has aimed to realize a sustainable society through the development of innovative insect resources. Superworms are an eco-friendly protein production resource with high growth efficiency, and the company is strengthening its research and development and market adaptation to maximize its potential. Through cooperation with Kagoshima University and other research institutions, we will continue to contribute to the development of sustainable food resources and take on further challenges to realize a future that coexists with the environment.
