illustrator Keita Minami from Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Due to the influence of her father, a picture book writer, Minami became familiar with drawing from an early age, but paints didn’t suit her gender and she only drew black and white portraits with pencils. Then, when I was 20 years old and attending a set mode seminar, I discovered crayons, which I still use today. Minami says that being able to color using her physical sensations without putting any tools between her body and the painting freed her from the difficulty she had previously felt in her life. “Especially at school, I felt like I was cutting down on my individuality and making parts that fit a standard, so I didn’t fit in. “Normal” and “common sense” bring order, but at the same time they take away freedom and make it suffocating. Drawing saved me from that, and crayons gave me a sense of freedom that I had never felt before.” Although he was aware of the common sense and rules of living in society, he believed that by keeping a certain distance from them he could take control of his own life, and with the motive of “shaking people’s common sense”, he started using crayons. I have started hand-creating. Since then, he has built up a career as an illustrator, illustrating books and magazines, and has recently expanded his range of expression to include not only crayons but also stencils and digital collage works. Minami’s works, colored with crayons and oil pastels, are light and airy, yet evoke an
indescribable sense of unease in the viewer. Please visit YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA to explore the southern world of expression and discover a new version of yourself.
