URL: Aeon Environmental Foundation Public Interest Incorporated Foundation Press release: November 13, 2024 “Aya Town Aeon Forest” tree cultivation activities carried out On Saturday, November 23rd, Aya Town, Higashimaro Prefecture District, Miyazaki Prefecture (Mayor: Shunji Matsumoto) and the Aeon Environmental Foundation (Chairman: Motoya Okada, Director and Representative Executive Chairman of Aeon Co., Ltd.) will open the Aya Town Aeon Forest on Saturday, November 23rd. We will carry out tree cultivation activities. Aya Town, home to Japan’s largest evergreen forest, was registered as a UNESCO Eco Park in 2012. For three years starting in 2013, our foundation carried out tree planting on the site that had been felled for the construction of Aya Junior High School in order to regenerate it into the original Satoyama. In addition, since 2017, we have been planting a total of 20,000 trees in order to create a satoyama that aims to coexist with nature and humans, as we have entered into a partnership agreement with the Japan UNESCO Eco Park Network. Furthermore, starting in 2022, we will carry out plant dyeing using the bark of bayberry trees in the tree planting area, with the aim of utilizing the Aeon Forest of Aya Town and experiencing the traditional culture of Aya Town. Since last year, we have also been involved in tree planting activities called pruning to foster the satoyama. This year as well, we will carry out “pruning” and “weeding.” Aya Town and the Foundation will continue to collaborate and actively engage in environmental activities such as satoyama development in order to pass on the rich nature to the children who will be the next generation.
