[TEI SOLO EXHIBITION “D.O.A.T. D.O.A.T. D.O.A.T.”] Gallery curated by Yasumasa Yonehara from Friday, November 15, 2024 tHE GALLERY HARAJUKU will be holding a solo exhibition by Ryosuke Chod, “D.O.A.T. D.O.A.T. D.O.A.T.” We will exhibit and sell works featuring the original character “D.O.A.T.”. Please take a look. ● STATEMENT My original character “D.O.A.T.” is neither a dog nor a cat, but is a character that combines elements of both. The name includes the words “Dog” and “Cat” and is also an acronym for “Doors Open Another Tomorrow,” symbolizing hope for the future. D.O.A.T. has no set gender or age, and can freely change its nature. In its eyes, a white X is drawn within a black circle, making it a symbol of contradiction and harmony, just like in Taijitu, where contradictory elements such as black and white, circles and Xs coexist. Born during the uncertain times of the coronavirus pandemic, D.O.A.T. was born as an art work to pursue free expression that is not bound by boundaries. When D.O.A.T. wears the costumes of famous characters or imitates their movements, he begins to look like the famous characters in a way that doesn’t feel right. This raises the question, “Where does identity reside?” For example, when we wear luxury brand clothes or fast fashion in the real world, our impressions of others and our sense of self change. This phenomenon makes us think about what we define ourselves by. D.O.A.T. presents this question of “What is identity?” through pop and friendly expressions. We create a space where our diverse values intersect and continue to reflect on character culture and the essence of the self together with our viewers. ― Ryosuke Hodg ●Ryosuke Tei profile Born in Kobe as a third-generation Chinese. After graduating from Tama Art University’s Department of Painting, majoring in oil painting, he began his career as an artist. From the 1970s to the 1990s, he was constantly told, “You’re not Japanese,” in Japan, and “You’re not Chinese,” in China, making him question his wavering identity. While facing the question “Who am I?”, I engage in creative activities that explore my roots and identity. However, after losing his parents’ home in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, he stopped his artist activities and turned to the video game industry. I started a new career as a graphic designer and worked in the design field for about 30 years. In 1998, he established “Furi Furi Company,” which combines character design and graphic design, and has attracted attention by being involved in character projects for major domestic and international companies such as NIKE, Nintendo, Bandai, Sega, and Sanrio. (Furi Furi Company was disbanded in 2008) After that, in 2011, he established his own private office, Okosa Master Co., Ltd. In 2022, he began his journey as an artist again, exploring the theme of “Where does identity reside?” through the original character “D.O.A.T.” He develops his works in a unique style that fuses character culture and street culture, and expresses his identity amidst the intersection of diverse values and backgrounds. @tei.artworks https://www.instagram.com/tei.artworks <X> @RyosukeTei https://x.com/RyosukeTei ●From curator Yasumasa Yonehara Rather than sublimating the manga-like approach into works as art, With a true sense that manga-like works depicting characters are themselves art Destroying the art scene.
