In order to deliver safe and delicious seafood food to Japanese dining tables, this event appeals to the public about the importance of protecting and managing marine resources and preserving the environment of the sea, rivers, and lakes, and promotes fisheries production and cultivation. It is held every year in various locations for the purpose of promotion and development. Since the Emperor and Empress attend the ceremony every year, it is considered one of the three major “gyokōkei” events, along with the National Tree Planting Festival and the National Athletic Meet. This time, the Onna Village Cooperative Coral Forest Liaison Association received the Minister of the Environment Award in the fishing grounds and environmental conservation category. This is our second award, following the Minister of the Environment Award at the 36th National Sea-Enriching Conference – Yamagata (held from September 10th to 11th, 2016). To receive the award, Atsuyuki Shibusawa, Managing Director of the Pal System Federation (Chairman of the Liaison Committee), attended the ceremony and the meeting with Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress. The liaison group promotes “satoumi creation” where people grow mozuku, a specialty of Onna Village, and grow it together. Planting coral through coral farming, interacting with consumers to deepen their understanding of products and production areas, improving satoumi management methods in collaboration with research institutions, and the fact that these activities have been ongoing for 15 years. The project was also highly praised for its progress in environmental conservation from land (countermeasures against red soil runoff). In 1998, the Onna Village Fisheries Cooperative Association began activities to raise parent coral and foster a coral reef sea. In November 2009, four parties supporting this activity, the Pal System Federation, Igeta Takeuchi Co., Ltd., Onna Village, and the Onna Village Fisheries Association, established the Onna Village Churaumi Farm Direct Council. In April 2012, the Onna Village Co-op Coral Forest Liaison Committee was formed by co-op organizations that are carrying out similar initiatives, and currently includes Onna Village, the Onna Village Fisheries
Cooperative, Igeta Takeuchi Co., Ltd., and the Tokai Co-op. A total of 14 organizations: Co-op, iChoice, Co-op Hokuriku, Co-op
