Seikatsu Club Co-op Press Release (2024.11.15) Seikatsu Club Co-op Federation ~Support for delivering ordered food to those in need~ Seikatsu Club Co-op’s new food bank system “Ofukuwake” second edition begins The first batch includes
approximately 1,260 bags of 5kg rice for a total of 10,945 servings. Delivered Seikatsu Club Business Federation Consumers’ Co-operative Union (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Chairman: Shoichi Murakami, hereinafter referred to as Seikatsu Club) provides food support through local food banks and other organizations that cooperate with the community by providing food ordered by its members. The second phase of the new food bank system “Ofukuwake” to reach those in need will begin on November 18, 2024. This “Ofukuwake” is an experimental initiative that started in June 2024 at eight local Seikatsu clubs. The “Ofukuwake” method is first that members order items from Seikatsu Club just like any other item. Food assistance is then delivered to those in need through food bank organizations and other organizations that work together in each region. This is a system in which the Seikatsu Club rice that members always eat can be
distributed to those in need. In response to the huge demand for rice from people in need of food assistance, the second round will focus on “Ofukuwake Rice,” which is made by squeezing rice into small pieces. Continuing from the first round, we have received great cooperation from partner producers Zen-Noh Pearl Rice Co., Ltd. and the Zen-Noh Group to deliver rice directly using their transportation networks, so this time as well we hope to deliver rice to even more people. We ask for cooperation from members.

■Background of the initiative Due to the prolonged economic downturn, an increasing number of people are having trouble getting enough to eat every day. In response to this situation, Seikatsu Club has continued its food bank activities in each region together with its members and producers. In addition to donating household ingredients, traditional food banks make effective use of food waste, such as substandard products from farmers and unused food from food
manufacturing companies, but Seikatsu Club donates food products based on orders from members. Food waste is almost eliminated due to “reservation group purchasing” where cooperative members plan and produce food and cooperative members use it. Therefore, after discussions between cooperative members and project members from affiliated producers, we decided to start “Ofukuwake,” a program in which cooperative members can participate in food bank support by placing orders. In the first round, which took place in June of this year, a total of 10,945 orders were received. We were able to deliver 4,644 sets of packed rice, canned tuna, and freeze-dried soup sets, and 6,301 kg of rice (approximately 1,260 bags) to many people in need.
